My lad moved out this weekend and unbeknownst to me we had been watching his TV for the last couple of years..
When my daughters tv packed up a while back the missus gave her ours and the lads tv came down downstairs and replaced ours, he moves out and we are tellyless.

Shows how much notice I take of things..

I could not care less but the wife had gone cold turkey and taken to her bed.

I've had a quick look at the up to 300 quid mark in Asda but there's so many variables I'm lost..
Any tips, bargains out there?

Get yourself to a supermarket and £300 - will buy you a working - smart TV with - loads of channels (freeview).

Medion 50" here from Aldi. £279 I think it was. Built in Netflix, Amazon, YouTube etc. Sound was a bit crap but added an old 2.1 (I think) surround sound system from an old pc, straight off the telly headphone jack.

Figured if we're going to be knocking through the lounge diner it'll be dusty and anything decent will get ruined.

Well happy with it.

I'd probably look at Cello next

The main thing to remember is that only LG and Samsung make their own TVs. Almost everything else is a rebadged Vestel (Turkish) so you get the same heap of junk regardless of the badge on the front. Remember to pay with a credit card because if you buy a Vestel, you WILL be making a claim under Consumer Rights Act 2015, it's just a question of when.
Don't be taken in by "Made in the UK" claims. They are the same Vestel junk shipped over in kit form and they assemble them here.

Be sure to have a play with the "smart" bit - some of the software really is a bit cumbersome/slow/rubbish !

We only change (anything) once in a blue moon but recently pushed the boat out and got a LG 55nano, & 2 months on we're very happy with picture, sound and smart-functions

TVs are massively cheap these days relatively, personally I would go to somewhere like Costco as you get a 5yr warranty as standard. You can get major brand 75" TVs for less than £500 now.

The biggest issue I see with TVs now is really the picture quality, it's things like the user interface. Some of the menu systems are horrible to use.

I think it also easy to get sucked into 4k this super resolution that but the reality is if you just watch TV for entertainment many of things really don't matter

You beat me to it, that is the biggest issue today with TVs. We have 3 Toshiba and the latest one(few years old now) has an absolutely horrible terrestrial TV interface, you end up clicking multiple times just to select a program.

Now we mostly use a Firestick so it's not an issue.

I usually go into Richer Sounds and ask their advice. They usually have ones on offer. I have had 3 LG's, been really happy with them.

I think only the high end movies will have the budget for the arri's to do all that super resolution.

I think most people get a TV that's far too big for their room. I like a decent sized screen but some TV 's are so big I'd want to knock a hole in the wall so I could sit further back. Ours is 42", bought second hand to replace the rebounded Turkish one that packed up, works perfectly, especially through the firestick and cost me £80 if I remember correctly. I certainly wouldn't want anything bigger!

That's fine as long as buyers go in with their eyes open. It is all too easy to choose a Panasonic, a Toshiba or any other trusted brand and think that is what you are buying. It is a badge and nothing more, which I think is tragic.

100% people get are always convinced bigger is better, once you get into the these modern huge sizes the average house isn't big enough. My mate has one in a narrow room and it's almost uncomfortable to watch becase you find you are moving you head to see it all

I've always had good luck with Sony TVs. The vestel stuff @ajlelectronics mentions is dreadful, as I found out the hard way. JVC, Sharp, Toshiba and doubtless a few others all have the same guts and they are a rancid pile of foetid entrails. Other than that they are lovely...

I'd take a fire TV stick with a non smart TV over a smart TV. Interface works well and doesn't feel clunky unlike some dedicated smart TVs.
