Needle Scaler? Tell me more, please.

Hi guys and gals, anyone used a Needle Scaler before? I haven't.

Basically, I'm looking for an education. I originally bought my compressor for sandblasting but If I'm cleaning a highly corroded piece of metal, such as a subframe (as opposed to a more delicate material), what quality of finish would I expect from the Needle Scaler? Pro's / Cons etc? It's all appreciated.

I came across these devices as I was looking for an air chisel to use in a home made air planisher.

2nd thread now and I have not yet been confident to help with other peoples questions so I feel a bit rude. I've recently got re-discovered my metalwork / fabrication passion (just as winter takes over the old shed).

Hi

With a needle scaler I found that I was left with lots of little indents with the depth depending on the angle it was held. Great for heavy duty rust removal but would need refinishing somehow - sanding , etc.

I have a clarke pistol grip type one that i have used a fair bit for removing paint off stuff, it worked well but as said it can leave a bit of a dimpled sort of finish.

Took the needle bit off mine and used it for this.......

Wyn, is that a planisher?

Where do people get these metal work benches from? In my youth I was tempted to remove a sheet from a hole in the road and replace with plywood, always too honest though (and I've suffered theft of $K's myself).

I think sheds must kick out an hour before pubs, everyone's on line at this time!

It was supposed to be but that was as far as i got with it. The scaler worked ok and was controled by that cable operated footpedal on the bench. I never got round to sorting out any bottom tooling.

Wyn, don't know what facilities you have available but a highly modified version of one of these may do the trick. It's a bit ambiguous what's included in the price so I was thinking of messaging the guy to find out. Probably something more purpose made for a similar price if we were to search for it.

Does the air chisel thingy have a reciprocating valve built in?

The chisel does reciprocate on it's own.....just pull the trigger and hold it down.

They look like they are more for forge work...drawing out round bar and that sort of thing.
I think the tooling i was going to use was only going to be around 50 mm diameter or something along those lines.
The planisher i was making was getting in the way after sitting there for a few years...so it's sitting outside on my scrap pile now

They called it a rattler at the mill I worked at. It was an awful long time ago, so I can't remember for sure what I used it for. Maybe chipping paint off something before it could be welded to?

I can see it being useful for removing flaky rust on thick metal, but I doubt it would be much better than wire brushing. You'd still need to follow up with sandblasting if you needed a clean metal finish.

there good for removing thick paint millscale and badly coroded parts . the the hammer action is quite severe though not ideal on thin material . and as said leaves indents in metal
