I'm off work just now with time on my hands due to a smashed up foot.
I quite fancy a go at makeing a bird sculpture of some kind for the garden.
I've lots of 1.5mm sheet an a big roll of fencing wire .
I've got .6 and .8 wire and gas and my rtec 180 .How should I go about makeing the frame to weld to I'm thinking about a stork of some kind.Sammy.

I think you may get many different opinions here.

What I do in situations like this is first start of with your materials (most of my projects start off with things I have) then go to garden centres etc that sell the sort of sculpture your interested in as well as looking at images on the net and then try and come up with a plan / design that you can make with the tools, materials and technology you have

This will give you the most satisfaction as it will your design based on a range of ideas

Have you got a compressor, Sammy? Cutting the sheet will become a major pain in the butt so, if you've got a compressor handy, you're more than welcome to a shot of my plasma cutter for a couple of weeks.

In terms of skeleton / structure, I've not used fencing wire but mainly used 3mm rod for skeletons for the (few) bits of sculpture I've worked on.
I suspect the fencing wire might be a wee bit thin (also depends on how low your welder can go) so rod could be better.

Try google images.
I find it helpful whne I start a project to look at what other people have made relating to the subject I am thinking of.
Often the best ideas can come from the works I like least.
Instead of copying something I will go 'not like that!' and work from there..

Ive got an idea for a dinosaur, it's going to be made from an old gas cylinder and some 6mm plate. Legs will be 16mm dia rebar. Project won't kick off until I can work out how to make the head.

Plenty of ideas on the web but nothing like I'm planning

The secret is just to make a start.

If you've only a vague image in your head of what you want to make I'd say start with something you do have an idea about ...maybe a beak shape, talons or how you'd like your feathers to look. You'll be surprised how ideas flow once you're on the move with it.

Don't be afraid to 'undo' stuff you've just done if you suddenly have a better idea ...it's an organic process really.

Use google images for reference, but be careful not to just end up 'borrowing' other's ideas ...what's the point of that!

Hi Sammy,
Just go for it - although it might help if you could draw what you want first, then scale it up, maybe in chalk, so you get the proportions right -- this will give you something to check against, too. For anything tricky, try making it in paper or cardboard first, like my pics above.

Well after much discussion with my daughter poppy she's 10 we decided to try and make a dodo bird.My thoughts were at least nobody can say that doesn't look like a dodo.so started today no plans just some 6mm rod an a pair of bolt cutters.I'm really struggling with my mig welding for some reason so stuck together with stick.
