New air compressor - hot!

Hey,
Got a new compressor today. I did a test from empty to full and by the time it was finished the head was too hot to touch for longer that a second or so. Normal to get this hot that quickly? Cant say I ever lent on my old one!
Has oil in and the breathers are attached, first thing I checked.
Had plenty of room around the compressor but room temperature was about 34 degrees.
Just want to make sure it was normal before seeing how it copes in an enclosure I have made for it (see projects thread).

Edit: some actual info so you may be able to help.. tandem unit, 28cfm, 18cfm FAD, single phase, belt driven. Took around 3 minutes to fill from empty.

I would have thought that was normal, I modified the output connections on mine so it goes through a cooler before going to the receiver. I can’t remember the exact temperature that I measured on the outlet fitting from the pump but think it was in excess of 80c. Made finding a suitable flexible hose interesting.

Thanks, I thought it might be normal due to the quantity of air being compressed and how hot it was today. May look at that idea for a cooler in the future, did it affect your pumps efficiency at all? Increased resistance going in to the receiver? May install some form of cooling system from the main tank to a secondary 100L tank, seems easier and not messing with anything that would invalidate warranty then.

I haven’t noticed any difference in performance as it’s basically a little radiator between the pump and the reciever, but I get very little condensate in the reciever if any at all. Does depend on wether conditions, but don’t check as often as I should as I also have two mechanical automatic drains after the cooler and one electronic auto drain on the reciever. The compressor was checked Monday for my insurance and it was dry then but it doesn’t get used every day

I use a secondary tank on the end of the line before it connects to the water separator on my blasting pot. it cools and sorts the water problem out no bother

totally normal.......just make sure there is a good air supply.......that's why compressors in boxes need ducting and big fans.........
mines in a corner on it's own, helps with the noise and no clutter.....
