New angle drill - damn handy!

I had to buy a new tool yeasterday, a 12v angle drill from Milwaukee. Ordered it last night about 8pm from FFX, arrived today just after lunch - damn good service if you ask me and not a bad price at £79 delivered next day for the bare drill.

The reason? Four snapped manifold studs on my granddaughter's Fiat 500. Didn't want to take out the radiator and air con rad so the only way was to drill them in the space I had.

So I first made a drilling guide by drilling some thick gauge plate then facing it off to leave a locating stub which located in the shallow counter-bore they put on the hole for the studs (which I was VERY grateful for)

This drilling guide, and the angle drill allowed me to do this:

And fit these:

Definitely a keeper!

I've a similar drill, mightn't be the fastest, but it's a fantastic machine with a wire brush. So much slow torque.

My ocd notices the odd stud but it looks turned while the others bought?

I bought a used dewalt angle drill on here and its been sitting on the healing bench for a battery adaptor conversion, but it can be bodged into service quickly if needed.

Lidl were selling some last week but the spec appeared poo, about a third the torque compared to their normal 12v drill (which is actually quite good!) So I left it on shelf..

I too have a right angled drill and find it incredibly useful compared to generic pistol type drills.
Would recommend.

Thanks for the reminder. I've been meaning to buy a right angle drill this years and that is a good deal so I just bought one.

It's the sort of thing you don't need very often but when you do you'll be very glad it's there.

Any of the right angle drill adopters I have bought in the past have all been very poor quality and a waste of time.

You can have the best of both worlds with some tools. Bosch do the Flexiclick, & Milwaukee, DeWalt etc. do similar.

They wouldn't get into quite as tight a spsce as the above type drill though.

Stub drills and spotting drills might also be useful to keep in your mind for really tight situations. With a standard jobber drill, the fluted length is longer than on a stub drill of the same diameter limiting the amount of reduction possible.

I had to cut down the fluted length then spilt the point to allow the drill to cut freely enough that I could push it through the stud without wandering.

I just cut down the fluted end of the drill, resharpen and off we go.

All joking aside there have been plenty of times I wished I had a decent angled drill in my garage for tight spaces. Like installing towbars etc and had to remove more parts to squeeze a regular drill in.

I got this drill in the post today. Like all Milwaukee stuff it feels high quality and well balanced etc.

There is also forward, reverse and variable speed control settings on it. (A separate control wheel for speed) and an led light on it for where you are drilling.

Can't wait until the stub drill bits get here as I have a job for it. (Opening up the sealed galv holes in my box section gates)

lathe center drills work really well a starter bits in an angle drill ,,, they tend not to wreck everything around them.

The 'speed control wheel' is not a speed control, it's a torque control for using driver bits. Turn t all the way up you'll see it has a 'drill' setting at the top. Ikept it low so it stopped drilling when it brike through the back of the stud. Pretty handy.
