New compressor now wanting to fit a drop leg etc ?

Hi there,

Ive now sorted the garage out and placed the compressor in the area it will be staying for a while. I have fitted the whip pipe and wonder if the set up ive fitted is good enough for occasional spraying, light work etc. I could do with some ideas on how to go about fitting the best system for paint spraying, in my small garage ?

I have 2 small filters and one new medium filter at the gun end, should i fit the compressor side filter/reg lower or higher than where it is now. From what ive read on the compressor tutorial DIY set up page it needs to be higher ?

Could you please link me some places that sell things like, drop leg outlets and copper piping etc ?

I will be fitting the 10mm pipe up high from this filter then back down further down the garage to a hook then it will lead to the floor for use.


Any other quick advice on how to go about getting the best prevention from water/oil when paint spraying would be appreciated.

Also, they only sell the small connector on the whip pipe that goes to the filter instead of the preferred euro type



One more thing, would using large duct piping over the compressors filter and lead them to the rear window be the best idea of solvent prevention, or shall i use a large plastic sheet over the rear of the car from ceiling to floor to block it out ?

the filter seperator will filter oil out as well. my comp chucks a fair bit of oil through and the seperator catches all of it

your filter seperator is too close to the compressor, with prolonged use it will heat up and stop filtering water

Any help in finding a dog leg release valve ?

The whip hose is the longest they sell, so it will have to do and the coupling wont come undone, unless i use my hand and pull it open of coarse

The compressor end could have had the 1/4 inch link fitting but they only sell the small type connectors not euro, so connector had to go into the coupling.

I have used it and found some water in the filter bowl but none at the other ends filters.

I suppose i could had tried another place for a better whip hose but postage would then be a lot more when i bought other stuff at the same time you see.

Personally I would remove the bung on the receiver and fit a 1/2" regulator there. or pipe up to a 1/2"port reg on the wall. I wouldn't use anything smaller thats my personal preference of course.

Thats a good tip, when i fit a filter/reg on the tank it will make the other one higher up like it says to do on the tutorial. I have 2 reg's, one above and one at the gun end.

The amount of time this compressor will be spraying will be in short burst/time slots, it's not for a whole car or on for ages. So the compressor wont built up too much water.

When i release the whole tank's air too quickly it comes out freezing around the screw bung, although the pipes on the compressor do get very warm when in use.

Justoffbase where i got a lot of the bits dont sell 13mm pipes with 1/2 ends, so i bought the 10mm one. I did find a pipe on ebay yesterday that size though.

Ill try and find a 13mm whip hose with the 1/2 fitment and euro connector if i can. Ill get the 1/2 pro filter at the receiver then use the 1/4 as it is now, money is tight at the mo so i got what i could.

After doing a bit more research i found a few internet posts on the compressor piping set ups, and the best way of preventing water getting to the gun. I found this site http://www.airlines-pneumatics.co.uk/webcat/Detprod.asp?ProductCode=S07010020&prod= that seems to have all i'll need apart from copper piping, got a family member in the trade for that.

What ill do for now is have the 10mm pipes going high from the compressor then drop, then back at height again etc.

When i change the compressors position i will connect copper piping with the above type ball joint valves and the 1/2 filter at the receiver. Then i will fit the piping in a stair type system with 2 drop leg release valves. Then ill fit this 1/4filter on the end of the copper piping at the other end of the garage, so it still has some use.

If you have any other ideas let us know, i might write up a fitting a pipe set up in a small garage thread, with links etc.

I think you're way over-complicating this. A long-ish line to a good quality regulator/separator with a decent filter size will be fine, it's what many folk have and I had for a few yrs. One mini-filter attached to the gun as insurance.
Many cheap regs have 50 micron filter, you can get them down to 5, mine are 10microns.
You can get copper tube and plumbing fittings and ball valves from loads of places in Screwfix. Think I bought valves from ebay but fittings mostly from Screwfix when I did my copper - only did that because of fitting an airfed system.

the condensation is caused by the compression process the comp sucks in moist air its heated up then cooled as it enters the receiver.

and that is also how the filter works the condensation method thats why i posted that your filter is too close to the comp with prolonged use the air will eventually heat up the filter stopping the condensation process

So having one at the receiver like already advised is not a good idea ?

I spoke to my heating engineer step dad and he had all the valves/pipes i need etc, he is ill at the mo through an industrial accident but said he'll mock something up for me once iv measured etc.

Im going to use the plumbers 22mm copper pipes, does the copper pipe have to be specially thick for 8bar pressure ?

He told me he has fitted compressor pipes in the past on jobs and that he used their own steel galv pipes ??

it is recomended that your filter is about 18 feet away from the comp if thats possible if not you would be better having both closer to the end of you line
