New compressor setup

Hi, I have just got an abac b1394/150 and now need to pipe it up.

Initially I want to shot blast with it, then get another smaller compressor and couple them together then run a spray gun and an air fed mask.

I am looking at getting the DeVilbiss Filter Regulator Coalescer and the Iwata AZ3 HTE2 mainly because thats what I think I want and from what I have read but other suggestions welcome.

The shot blast tank would be one of the 20gallon ebay jobbies.

1. If I have a filter regulator near the end of my line, the Devilbiss jobby then do I need one off the compressor to regulate air direct from there (or will i need one off the compressor when I couple it with another)?

2. Copper compression pipe fittings are ok, ie like from B&Q, or do I need to source special ones?

3. Flexible hosing from compressor to pipework, can these really be just tap ones? How do I know they have enough pressure to cope as the ones I have seen don't have any ratings they just say tap hoses.

4. When I run my shot blaster should it come through my filter regulator or will I be needlessy using up some filter life?

A regulator near the point of use is better. If tehre is one on the compressor, set it wide open.

Many compressors come with restrictive regulators. Oftem better to use a direct tap from the tank.

Compression fittings are ok, but i prefer soldered ones. Make sure they are rated for the pressure.

Not sure what you mean my tap fittings. I have pipe-thread to barb fittings. Then used auto fuel line (rated for fuel injection) with band hose clamps.

If you compresssor is working fine and has a working inlet filter, you should not plug up the filter.

I've used Screwfix compression fittings with no problems, they have BSP threads so you should be able to connect them to a hose tail OK. IIRC the 8mm fittings have 1/4 bsp threads, the 10mm ones 3/8 BSP. Some 8/10mm fittings from B&Q have metric? threads so be careful!

Run the shotblaster through a regulator/water trap, if you get moisture in the grit it will clog up.

Get some decent rubber airline, the Machine Mart one isn't upto much, I get mine from Beal (UK) Ltd (do a Google)

On a similar story, I have just acquired a Clarke Raider 50 but reading various advice seems I need to add some filters and oilers. Being a plumber, I was thinking of running a copper line through the garage using solder fittings;

Question: What size copper pipe/fittings should be used?.... I presume a standard solder joint will take the pressure?

I used 1/2" ID and 5/8 OD (save size pipe vs tubing.) Works well. The tubing is rated to 300PSI, I think the pipe was 250.

I guess over there it would be 12mm. Could not find any 3/8 (10mm) solder on fittings so have 1/2 threaded with adapters to 3/8.

Note: you want to use a solder with a low lead content. Most is lead-free here anyway. The lead will oxidize under the high pressure and fail. So I did not use my aincient roll of 50/50 solder

Thanks.... we can get both 10 and 12mm solder fittings..... then presumably I fit a flexible hose from the rigid to the compressor and a regulator/filter/oiler to the other end from where I can connect up with a whip hose. Was going to run the pipe high level with some sort of water outlet on the drops.

u can run 15mm copper pipe or 22mm . 22mm will give a better heat dissipation but 15 will be fine either soldered or compression fittings will be ok

dont bother with an oiler unless u use your air tools for long periods eg 8 hours a day. 3 drops of oil in the tool inlet before use is enough . otherwise u need seperate airlines for tools and spraying

I have 3 outlets:

1 - filter/oil fogger/reg at bench for air tools.
2 - plain connection for plasma cutter (has own filter/reg).
3 - filter/reg and hose reel for filling tires, blowgun and painting and running blast cabinet.

I have hoses dedicated to air tools with the oiler and one I use only for spraying. You need to keep all lines oil-free for spraying. The plasma has a dedicated oil-free line.

If you ever plan on painting, you need to consider it.
