New from Dundee

Just starting up as now have a garage for first time in 12 years. Mainly small jobs and a customisation of my old Suzuki in the offing but need a Mig first. have looked at most posts on here and think that the portamig 185 may be my best option as this seems user friendly (low start current of 15 amps for thin work plus enough oomph for thicker). I will also be making a couple of gates for the two driveways and a few other small projects round the house. My main aim is to complete a kit car chassis but think to start with i will be practicing on offcuts for a while.

The portamig is an excellent choice, I have one so I suppose that helps me make that decision.

Usually once you go above 150 amps you will require a dedicated fused supply, however for short runs it may manage ok right up to full power, mine does and it's the 235.

Which points me to a small suggestion if your budget allows, with the portamig you are hopefully buying once and buying right, more is good though and it would be a bummer in 6 months for you to be thinking you wished you had got the 235.

hi fellow scot, welcome to the forum. plenty of good info and nice folks here

portamigs get a good write-up, so would be well worth a punt id say. also worth looking on the bay-of-e, there are sometimes very good second hand mig welders (both single phase or three phase) decent makes e.g murex lincoln kemmpi esab etc. really depends what you want though.

I have a dedicated 16amp supply that I fed to the new garage so should be ok. PM'd Steve at weldequip, I have been looking on bay of e for a while and bid on a couple of 200 machines but they went above my second hand valuation. The portamig seems to be the one after much perusal just a question of whether or not I stump up the extra 60 smackers for a 215!
