Hi all,
Decided to join a welding/fab site, and picked this one. I'm not a member of any other welding site and do not normally join any, but seeing as I'm going to be concentrating on making a few goodies I thought talking amongst other like-minded folk would be a good start.
I've been in the vehicle/fab industry for over 30 years, well-versed in all aspects of spray-painting, and now find myself with masses of time on my hands. I have a good comprehensive array of tools/machinery, and practically enough to build/make/repair almost anything.......bar the eifell tower. Started off gas welding many moons ago, and I love gas welding. Moved onto mig, stick, and only just touched on tig, but found it fairly simple. My stick techniques were not the best, got good strong welds, but looked a bit sloppy. That has changed and my stick technique has dramatically improved to the point where I'm now happy with it.
I own a 260 amp stick welder, dual voltage. I also have a little 100 amp mig for light sheet work. Both machines work perfectly, are serviced regularly by myself, and I have no issues with them.
I've made many "tools" for my own use over the past years, tyre changer, engine stand to suit any engine rotates 360deg, and many more. I'm currently designing a sheet metal folder/pan folder machine so I can make my own tool chests.......'cos I aint paying the cost of them new. I want a 36" one with plenty of draws.
I've been lately pondering on whether to go and get into tig. I do see the benefits, but costs involved do have to be taken into consideration.
Should I stay with the machines which have served me well, and concentrate on using them for everything, or get into tig??? Then my head gives all the pros & cons, and I'm back to where I started!
I purchased a tig torch, wp17v, 150 amp air cooled, with dinz plug, so I could at least use it with my stick machine. I know it'll be scratch start, but I'll overcome that initial process. A bottle of argon and reg with flow meter. At least I'll be able to use it. The arc welder unfortunately does not have a low setting, I think she starts at around 65 amp, hence the little mig.
So guys & gals, (if there's any gals here!), do any of you use your stick for everything, bar light sheet work? I read on this forum of a guy doing a bit of stainless work on a playground swing, saw the pics etc., and though, "well maybe using stick on the whole might be ok", but then still had doubts.
