Will you use MIG welding in order to restore a car ?
Apart from the 50s Plymouth ( my mother's Grandmother use to own one, so I got some informations about it on the Internet ), I don't know American cars very much

That's what I'm hoping to do Gabriel. It's a 68 Mustang fastback that requires a substantial amount of welding.

I have been debating MIG, TIG, STAW, STRSW and advanced bonding materials like Fusor and Duramix. But I'm thinking MIG probably has the best tradeoff in terms of learning curve, cost, and versatility.

I have many hundreds of hours of restoration work ahead of me.

Same for me, but the car is not that mythical : it is a Renault 12 ( they were sold over the U.S. )

Yes I am familair with that R12.

So we're in the same boat. Well I hope we can share some of our experiences as we bring these cars back to life. I am brand new to welding. While I understand the principles I'm about as newb as they come.

The Mustang looks really cool. If it was me I'd restore the chassis and paint the body matt black. You'd be the coolest thing on the road.

I'd go with MIG for general car work. Stick is rubbish for thin metal, and TIG is very neat, but takes longer to do. Oxy aceytlene takes as long as TIG but the excess heat can warp body panels. Gluing things together sounds scary.:eek:

You'll probably find MIG easier to learn than TIG or oxy as well. Go for a decent one (maybe 150 amps), and if you've got a lot of welding to do then a rental (or bought) shielding gas bottle will be a money saver in the long run.

Joseph, I think you should have a look to http://www.renault4.co.uk/ to see Malcolm's work.

I'm not sure Renault exported the Renault 4 to the USA, or perhaps in the early years of production... ?

That said, they might have been exported longer to Canada ; I noticed last week this Renault 30 for sale over there!!!
No one could imagine that the 30 had been sold in North America too...
