Hi there, Seria,
Have you been welding long, and what sort of welding do you do?
There is a lot of knowledge about all sorts of welding related things here, (not from me, personally - you must understand!) so if anything is giving you any trouble, feel free to ask away. About almost anything!
I expect I've got this all wrong, and you're brimming with tip and tricks; in which case you'll find no end of questions!
Hi,
I haven't done any welding whatsoever. I am totally new to all kinds of welding. However I heard MIG welding is best.
My aim is to do minor repair on my 1993 Rover mini 1275 carbriolet. I therefore would appreciate all the pointers from you guys as to what is good set of welding machine, etc.
Mig is probably the way forward as it's easiest to learn. Arc (or "stick") welding is a bit trickier, and extremely so on thin sheet. Tig, at first, is something like juggling with 5 cats, and seems to take a fair bit bit longer to learn!
What kind of job do you have to do on the Mini? Generally, I find the places you need to get to are tricky to access, to say the least!
If you are to be welding outside, you might find a mig capable of switching polarity useful, as you'll then be able to use flux-cored wire.
Whatever you're doing with the car, pictures are always appreciated here.
In fact your Mini sounds quite interesting, so feel free to post a pic, even if you've not even welded it yet!
To be honest, I'm not sure what machines are available around your way, or even what voltage your mains supply would be, so it would be hard to recommend any particular welding set. You might even have access to 3-phase, where you are?
Thanks CJ
There is rust on the floor pan. Several places already develop holes (I will take picture and post it next time).
Over here in Brunei, I have access to 3 phase and the voltage supply is 220 to 240 volts. MIG is not popular here. In fact I can hardly find MIG on the market.
Here are pictures of my mini.
Hi there,
Well, thats a very nice Mini - very nice indeed!
Surprising about the mig situation there though. I sort of assumed that Clarke or variations of the same (and others) would be all around.
Do you have a local version of e-bay or similar where you are, or are there welding suppliers around, but mig is just few & far between?
If there are welding suppliers around, I imagine if they stocked other types they could demonstrate or order one in, if they really had none at all in stock.
I'm still pondering this one - meanwhile others will see this, and hopefully be along with more & better ideas.
Maybe luck will be more on your side with the areas you'll have to weld, and they'll be in easy to reach places, instead of tricky little corners!
Stay on the case!
Regards,
CJ
I was just casting around for welders in Brunei - didn't realise (you'll already know this, though!) that you were so near to Australia! - my geography seems mostly based on guesswork + imagination!
Didn't yet find any welders yet though! (you'll probably have already guessed that, too!)
Still looking!
CJ
Not doing too well so far, only place I can find is a college that does welding called "The Jefri Bolkiah Engineering College" which is in Kuala Belait, Brunei.
Their normal web page doesn't work at the moment, but maybe they could give you a few clues as to how to track down welding equipment locally. I'm casually using the term "local" here, but I also realise this could be hundreds of miles from you. Not too sure if this attempt at a link will work:-
Hi there,
Well, there is no local version of e-bay.
Over here there are a few welding suppliers but non of them sell MIG. But that is not a problem as I can always get one into Brunei from Singapore.
Ya, "The Jefri Bolkiah Engineering College" which is in Kuala Belait, Brunei is a college and they don't sell MIG and I am only 5 minutes drive away.
I have not got the time to take some pictures of the rust. I will do it this weekend.
By the way what is a good MIG welding I should be considering. Appreciate all the pointer out there.
Thank you.
Hi there, Seria,
Hmm, yes, I had difficulty finding any type of e-bay place in Brunei, too!
Welding wise, I suppose the easiest ones to recommend are the well known/well thought of brands like Kemppi, Lorch, Esab, Miller, Lincoln etc, as I would expect those bigger names would have some sort of representation out that way, (I see them all as being "worldwide" , or at least "international") and so should be able to provide the spares, technical help or warranty support that everyone will find a need for at some time.
A part of the Forum is dedicated to some of these, and other brands:- http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=15
There's another link somewhere on buying a welding machine, too - but I expect you've come across them both already, by now.
It must seem a lot of trouble to go to, (I'm thinking Singapore, here!) to get hold of a welder,- but hey, it's a nice car, plus the welding itself is not so bad either. I'd go so far as to say enjoyable, but then I don't have to do it all day every day, so I'm no great authority on these things!
Others will have their opinions, I'm sure, and will be along to have their say too - (Won't you, folks?), at which point there will be more to go on.
Funny world, eh? If you weren't located so far from the back of beyond, I'd happily send you my Sip 170 "Pro", but your country would definitely need to be completely bereft of any welders to even let it through (long hand for:- "not too well regarded!")
Don't get me wrong, mine works ok, (I suppose), but its absence from the above list wasn't an oversight!
Gotta go, my son's just smashed his (own) face in!
