Hi everyone my name is Rob , 17 years old,i have occasionally arc welded. Im in the process of a landrover series 1 restoration so ive have decided to look into the mig part of things when i go at the usual chassis work , i may have a bit of stainless steel to do aswell and ive being told thin alu body work is not very successfully migged anyway ill need a machine capable of 12mm mild aswell . Ive bought a speedglas autodark recently so want to stick to quality products , whats the story with second hand? the usual buy and sell sites i check nearly daily and ifs theres something up its sold or overpriced is there anyone here that could sort me out..................Thanks (it must be the quickest ive introduced myself after joing a forum) great site ill give you all that

hi rob and welcome it's pretty hard to find a decent secondhand machine over here saying that i did buy 250 murex off done deal for reasonable money so they do pop up every now and again but you need to move very fast
you will also find it hard to get a machine that can do bodywork and also weld about 10mm most of the bigger sets will have too high a minimum amps mine only goes down to about 40amp
when buying secondhand stick to the good brand names

stick welder for the thick stuff and a light mig for the rest? i bought a clarke 150tm - its no miller but its good enough for body work anl light structural fab, i have an old pickhill welder(stick) it just needs some leads and it works(last time i checked was a few years ago) oul fella myt sell it! if i was gona buy a mig again i would have gone for either a miller or a lincoln or an esab,only because we have a garage and the work is a little industrial sometimes

I would agree with Scarecrow on the availability of used machines in Ireland , I have bought a few this past year but always needing a ferry journey , picked up a rough looking Thermal Arc 180 mig for around £60 in Manchester , same thing would sell for £200 or more here but its not quite powerful enough so I find myself using an invertor arc welder most of the time . Ideally I would like an old 250 amp Murex mig but as said already you would need to be on the phone the minute the advert appears .
