Hi, I've been tigging on and off since 1973, and the job just keeps changing! We used to just have Thoriated and Zirconiated tungsten, now, what choices! Arc balance, pulse? bendy torches, lightweight, variable shade automatic shields. Such luxury!
When I was last tigging, we used a linisher for electrode grinding, and it worked well (Silicon Carbide belts) for short electrodes, I used a pin vice to hold them to save my paws from overheating. Have used a needle file handle, too but only for 1/8" and 5/32" (3.2 & 4mm to the youngsters)
Tig welders used to have a habit of making a deep groove or grooves in a conventional green grit wheel, 'cos some were too lazy or too stupid to spread the wear out.
I'm looking for tig work in the Kettering/Wllingborough area now. (I'm getting to an age where I could happily sit all day sticking little stuff together) Don't mind working on or off books, and would consider providing all my own kit to work in someone else's premises.
