Hi all

my name is Hary and this is my first post on this site . so a little about myself
I am into classic cars and at the mo i have a bmw 2002 touring that i am fixing up

and this is how i found this site .I have been looking for info on how to mig welding and keep getting back here so i mite as well join as it has lots of good info.

i have a sip migmate 105 i know its not the best but its what i have . its been sitting in the garage for far to long and i think its time i started to use it

I have been practicing butt welding and also spot welding and will be looking for comments on my work because if i am doing something wrong and no one tells me how am i going to lean

the next thing i wont to do on my car is change the sills as they are not the best . this i would like to do soon

Welcome to the forum Harry, post so pics of you bmw, so we can see how much work you have let yourself in for.

If you got pics of practice welds post them here as well, you are sure to get pointers in the right direction if you are going wrong.

Not looking bad there. The one thing that stands out is the rusty steel. MIG doesn't like rust - it makes the arc less predictable.

The gas shielding looks like it's working OK, and you'll get the hand of going in a straight line soon enough. Well worth trying some edge to edge (butt) joints and fine tuning control of the penetration.

thanks for the reply . next time i will use a grinder to clean any metal

if i was to do a butt weld about 500mm what would be the best way . so as not to distort the metal to much ?

and when plug welding how big should the hole be on the first top piece of metal ?

To do a run 500 long, stitch it. Tack each end, tack the middle, tack the middle of the end. basically 5 small tacks to make sure its well held in place. Do a 25-50mm run leave a 100mm gap do a run leave a gap, then go back sort of like this.

leave room for a nice cup of tea between each go or run, if that makes sense
