Hi guys, getting ready for my art week thingy.
I need a collection of stuff that people can pick up and fall in lurve with and afford on the spot.
So I had a look at flowers.

Simple stuff, a half ball with a slug of sheet metal welded on the front and the stamens or whatever welded around the edge.

Mig welded.
Our precious pennies are made of probably steel, older ones are less magnetic, then later ones (nickel base?), the really old ones say pre 1988 are made of some weird fangled stuff.
Wave a magnet over the pot of pennies I reckon 80% are useful, some stick really well, the older ones just hang in there.
They cost pennies to make?
Aye, but it bugs me that it is cheaper to use money than metal.
Then try welding the suckers together, the smell of singing skin is lovely.

yes chunko but what you are missing is the fact that your material (the pennies) are at cost value where as the steel people are making a profit on

Paying beer vouchers for slugs from a sheet metal factory, buying a waste product, and faffing around contacting people and asking favours versus going to the local Spar and swopping gold coloured discs for copper coloured discs.
I went to the bank once asking for a fivers worth of pennies for a sculpture project, they kicked me out.

No they demanded to know what I wanted them for, could not see why myself. Weird.

I remember when the Indonesian currency, which was always dodgy, colloapsed completely in 1999, some bright spark got arrested for shipping 30 tons of coins to singapore, they were worth far more as scrap! They eventually replaced their coins with aluminium, and will probably go to recycled bean tins eventually. Nice work mate.

When I had a shop we could only get change for the tills from our bank and we had to take something to prove we banked there. Other banks would charge us for the change.

Apparently it costs the banks to get the change, dunno if its just transport costs or if there is another charge involved.

Anyway I really like the plants.

Legal tender amounts are interesting if you look them up. 1p and 2p coins are only legal tender up to 20p. If you offer more than that a shop can refuse you. Guideline amounts for legal tender.

In England and Wales the £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes are legal tender for payment of any amount.

Right, there's going to be a few bus drivers round here faced with court proceedings.

But that IS the problem. Since we stopped using coins worth there face value, they have no value.

It's worth remembering a "Bank note" used to be a receipt from a "Bank" to say you had "coins" or "gold" to the Value of the Bank Note in their vault. People used to "exchange" these for goods to the value of the Bank note. Of course only people of wealth had money in banks, so the rest of us used Coins that had a value.


It was the beginning of the end when the now in use Fractional Banking System was invented. circa 1920
