Hi, I stumbled across this excellent forum after buying a Clarke 135te welder. I thought the welder would be up to the job of restoring my old Saab 96 V4, but having a look in the projects section I think I might have to go bigger! I shall be asking the stupid questions soon!

I'd have thought that Clarke would be well up to restoring a 96. What bits do you think it might struggle with? Is it gas or gasless?

As is said here often, there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers

Are you on the UK Saabs forum, by any chance? There are a couple of 96 V4 restorations going on there at the moment.

Its currently its set up for gas, but I will need to get a bigger bottle. I'm only a 'lurker' on the UK Saabs site, I use the Saab V4 forum instead at the moment. As soon as the resto gets in to full swing I shall make myself known, the more advice the better.

As for the further projects, I was thinking of a modified intake manifold, a trailer, rollover bars.....

135A gas is perfect for car repairs, but you won't be able to make a trailer as you need some decent (200A) grunt to weld the drawbar etc, bearing in mind the liability involved in hauling decent loads. However, judging by the repairs on UK Mini Forums, the road salt industry and the MIG industry are heavily entwined and your welder is ideal. I have a Telwin 150A and it's amazing how literally everything around you either needs to be welded or could use a nice little metal stand with castors...

I have only been on this forum for a couple of weeks, but usually check out new posts several times a day as I have very poor work habits

Just beware, as Angusdog mentions it's amazing what needs welding, just never ever do it for other people.
Eg 'can you do a bit of welding on my exhaust'' cue presentation of yards of rusty, cack covered exhaust remnants.
