New to welding and this site

Hi Folks, just a brief intro, i am needing to upgrade my 4 wheeler boat trailer and was searching the web on information etc, i found this site and was very impressed at the knowledge the administrators and members had, being a complete novice welder,i have found this site perfect for what i need to do,
Anyway i,ll stop prattling on and just say thanks for having me.

Thanks Robotstar5, i,m afraid i,m just getting use to this small fluxcore welder, and my attempts so far are not anything to show or be proud of, but i will persevere and continue to practise, as my efforts so far are characteristic of Large Hen with intermittant loose stools

Welcome to the forum, I seem to be the first one to say about the issue of trailers, if you are building a new one then it will need an IVA which costs around £70 for a small trailer.... but even with thatcost it is often cheaper to make one than buy a new one. I am not 100% sure on the law relating to "refurbishing", I would guess that as long as a certain amount of material of the original trailer is used. Obviously you are building a possible killing machine, you have to be 110% sure it is going to be strong enough to take the weight of what you put on it as well as the roads and pot holes in this country, sure to stress the best of welds.....

If the trailer is existing then as far as aware iva etc doesn't apply. Your comment is very fair though but I for one get fed up pointing the legal issues out to people who often don't listen or worse start arguing the toss!

Hi Steve, thanks for info, the trailer i am refurbishing is almost 10 years old,its a 4wheeler 750kg indespension units on all wheels, its all 60mm box section, im fixing it up for the fishing season, last year the mudguard hanger bracket fell onto wheel and destroyed my tyre,it was a plastic tandem mudguard and i thought the L bracket was sufficiently strong enough to take the slight weight ( vibrated loose and broke weld and shredded tyre) all i,m doing is replacing with steel mudguards but welding them at front and back and fabricating two new brackets to take weight at front and rear, perhaps a tad OTT but beter than replacing 10" tyres at £48 a wheel . As i said in my introduction i am a newbie with a mig, so its a steep learning curve, but i am up for it.

Personally if I was welding on a boat trailer I'd use stick (as a newbie) more chance of doing a strong weld and getting enough penetration, these small mugs struggle to get enough heat in to the weld pool without some proper prep, just my opinion
