been useing it for a while now, everyone thought i was daft when i first mentioned it on here and thought i meant propane.
SGS have been pushing it quite hard.
it's proably best described as halfway house between acetaline and propane. if your used to propae it'll be amazeing, if your used to acetaline you should be abel to put up with it just.
i've never welded with it tho, it's ok for brazeing it's ok for cutting,

I`d not heard of it until I saw this thread. I`ve just been reading up on it on Wiki. Apparently it is also known as Propene and methylethylene

Let us know how you get on with it. Could be handy to have in stock for heating stubborn rusty items when dismantling, as an alternative to oxy/acet.

I'm sceptical about the welding claims... the only sources i've seen that claim it's suitable for welding with are places that sell the stuff for one thing. Unsuprisingly some of those that don't sell it because they sell acetylene state it's not suitable for example http://www.hobbyweld.co.uk/blog/article/51/no-alternative/
MAPP (and it's substitutes after they stopped making the 'real' thing) kinda work for welding the thinnest of thin sheet if the flame is set correctly but even then introduce free hydrogen into the weldpool so welds could be prone to hydrogen embrittlement. What looks like a neutral flame with oxy MAPP (if used to acetylene) is oxidising because like propane and propylene etc it has a much higher stoichometric O2 requirement than acetylene which uses O2 from the atmosphere in it's secondary flame providing a shielding effect in the process
While propylene produces slightly more BTUs than MAPP in it's primary flame it also produce LOTS more in the secondary flame, as said kinda placing it between acetylene and propane. I'm sure it's physical possible to weld with propylene but i'm not so sure it's a good idea to try welding anything important or even stuff like coachwork where the welds need to be tough and ductile enough for planishing and metalfinishing the joint

quite frankly i only use oxy acetylene for gas welding its tried and tested and stands the test of time. it may be slower but its more versatile than using a mig

I too am skeptical about this stuff. I looked at it while mulling over an investment in O/A gear for myself as a possible alternative to acetylene.
The seller(s) didn't seem to give any guarantee that it was suitable for giving good quality welds, they seemed to advise to check for yourselves particularly for anything important!

the carrot for Propylene is handeling wise it's not acetaline, as far as i can work out the rules for storeing it and transporting it are as per propane. but it burns hotter.
think of it as an upgraded version of propane not an acetaline replcement may be the best way to look at it

Quite a few years ago whilst I was still working, we were asked as the works Fuel & energy dept to find an alternative to acetylene, having had a few "near misses" on site with acetylene welding sets. We approached our local BOC depot & suggested this gas as an alternative.
We were already to switch over to its use, it being considerably safer to store & use than acetylene but at last minute they (BOC)said "you know it's not very good for welding there isn't enough carbon in the molecule to give the right welding temperature".
I was never really sure what they thought we wanted it for, other than welding but the changeover came to an abrupt stop & we continued using acetylene.

I had a google!
1. I have never been able to gas weld with Mappgas. I have had several failed attempts!
2. A couple of my customers who are roofers, use this type of gas for lead welding on site.
3. I never have a problem with heat output with oxygen and propane for heating things up, to get them apart!

I've been in shed loads of fabricators workshops over the years and never seen it. Got to be a good reason?

yea cos its useless . ok for refrigeration engineers doing brazing because its small and portable
I am an agent for Adams gas up here in Aberdeenshire. I sell lots of gas to smaller users who dont want a rental - over twice as much as I ever thought I would
Anyway....
Email from Adams today saying they are offering proplyene and came here to see what folks thoughts were. Might get a bottle or 2 in and let some experts try it out and see what they think. Never done gas welding and dont like selling stuff I dont know about.

Do you use the same gear as acytelene i.e 1 piece nozzle? or do you work a 2 piece nozzle like propane.
