Hey, first post here but have been lurking and reading for a little bit. Trying to get a Job as a Welder 2nd Class after being taught to use a MIG and Arc welder in a course. I was wondering what use http://www.gmcompany.com.au/index.cfm?module=products&pid=211 would be as a beginner welder to practice with at home on some offcuts that I picked up?

It will work but 2 things:
Duty Cycle 25% at 45A
Aluminum core
That is a low duty cycle even at near it lowest amps. I bet under 10% where you would probably be using it most.
I would look for a used on off ebay. There are a few ones listed. There are some noname MMA iverter ones listed real cheap like this one. I'd ask ethe seller about warranty, it is not mentioned.
Don't know how far this one is from you. That is the type you would want.
Look at either link and click on the welding category on the top. Select "Nearest First". If you can find one nearby at a decent price, it should be a good deal. Arc welders don't really wear out unless they are seriously abused.

i went with a CIGWELD Turbo 120 instead, for 30 bucks more. more reputable brand etc. similar to the Transarc Compact on their site. but mine runs 40A to 130A instead of 50-130.
had a go on some scrap to play with, some weren't too bad, some were great, some sucked. gotta try to find some place that supplies sheets of metal or something, cause this was galvanised pipe.
