Newbie from sunny southport

Hi to all, i'm about to start renovating my old rover p5b saloon, i last did it in 1986 and did all of the gas welding myself but not the mig welding, this time round i am looking to buy a welder and do the blinkin lot .....well thats the theory anyway, i'm on a limited budget for my equipment and am currently interested in the Clarke 160tm , it seems to get reasonable reviews and sounds as though it will handle the amount of welding i need to do ,

sills, d posts , panel repairs. etc etc , the list of panels needed to sort the car is quite long but i cant bear to scrap the old girl, owes me nothing and the resale value on these motors if renovated well is quite high.
any advice from owners/users of the 160tm will be much appreciated . bassy

That P5 is a thing of beauty. Good on you for keeping it all these years. My neighbour owned one for over 3 decades. I'd gladly give you a hand if I was a bit closer.

As for welders, I would say buy the best you can afford, but don't buy anything until you have absolutely sure it will meet your needs. Frequent the forum and find out what other people have used to do the work on their cars that yours needs.

PS: Your nickname does that refer to you playing a bass guitar ? (I only ask as I play bass )

hi zardoz , the motor is a member of the family now, i built a dutton phaeton kit car in 1982 and swapped it for the rover and cash best deal i ever did , just cant wait for warmer weather to strip it back and get cracking, there are some challenges with box sections rotted through and the sills are massive, so i will have my hands full, i will be getting a re fillable cylinder for the mig as i want to do a bit of practice welds on spare metal first, i dont expect it to be perfect but i dont want it bag assed. You spotted my monica in one, yeah i'm a bass player for my sins, we used to use the rover as a gig mobile in the late 90's towing an ex gas board trailer full of band gear....petrol was affordable then ! i'm currently playing in a blues/rock band 'Slyder' doing pub gigs around the northwest region, not the sort of music i like to play but its getting me out playing regularly. for the record i use a usa fender jazz , through either a hartke ha 5000 or ashdown mibass 550, a 12inch neo celestion and hartke 2.5xl speaker mix. music and rusty old motors are my passion are you out gigging yourself ?
