Newbie Saying Hello

Hi Folks,

I'm new to welding - very new, in fact I haven't even bought my first set yet !

I'm a Locksmith and I want to learn in order to weld/repair lock cages on gates and safes (for example). I've been recommended to get a MIG setup, and pointed to this forum for further advice/guidance, and general banter.

Welcome to the forum HandyHands.

MIG is probably the easiest and cheapest way of repairing that sort of thing. You should be able to make a reasonably strong weld without too much practice.

If you aren't going to be doing too much welding, and if much of it is outdoors then the fluxed wire option (gasless) might be a good option.

What sort of work would you be doing on safes? If you are welding to really thick stuff that has to withstand a lot of force then a reasonably powerful welder (150 amp or more) might be a plan.
