Newbie, with a problem

hi, this is my first post and i have a problem with my welder, if anyone can help or try helping i thank you in advance.

i have a draper MW135AT welder it allows for 0.6-0.8 wire but 0.9 was fitted, it worked for a day. next morning it stopped working. it would strike an arc but the wire feed is not working. The motor have been taken off away from gearbox to see if the shaft is turning but it is not. i have unplugged the motor and tested the the feed and it is getting 24v no matter how much the wire speed knob is turned up, it even gets 24v when the torch trigger is not pressed (should this happen?) the welder is not old and hasnt had much use its just needed now for restoring an mgb

any help really appreciated

If you hook the motor to a battery (12V), does it turn?

The leads may have voltage on them with no load.

Hi, thanks for the welcome and the help, just tried it yes the motor turns fine when connected to a 12v battery

Then it will be on the control board. Look for bad solder joints or burned components.

Post a pic of the board, we may recognize it.

There appears to be no damage or burnt parts or tracks, there is what llooks like a scratches out track but I assume that was from new as there is a resister that connects either side of the break. I've tried uploading some photos but don't know if its worked

You will be best putting the photos on somewhere like Photobucket or Flickr first, then linking them to your post via the 'insert image' button.

Actually its the one thing that we try to discourage, when pictures are moved or deleted from photobucket it effectively destroys threads on the forum,

Weird. I never knew that. Some Forums actually encourage you to NOT put pics on unless its by external picture server, as it slows down their servers.

Fair enough though. Will do it this way in future, when putting pics on this forum.

PS: I have a strange deja vu about this. I'm sure I have been though this same subject a few years back ? These old brain cells cant remember anymore

Hi, I will also so this in the future when it next goes wrong, didn't bother fixing the problem, just sorted out powering the motor from another source with a variable resistor in so I can change the speed myself, and wire into trigger on the gun so it powers the motor when ever I press it. Ill see how log this works f
