Newbie (with a rusty Viva)

Hi guys - I'm a total novice to welding as it's over 20 years since I did any and even then it wasn't pretty.

I've recently set out to restore a 1972 HC Viva with rotten inner wings, sills and some suspect areas in the floorpan. To be safe I am planning to leave any serious work on this car to a local professional. But since I am good with spanners I'd like to learn to weld as well.

So far not even looked at a welder, I thought it best to get some advice first.

I am off to do a crash course with a chap in a couple of weeks - but I know there's a lot I need to learn and practice.

Good luck on your mission.
I can never understand why anybody in their right mind would choose to restore an old motor. But I enjoy keeping up to speed with the unfolding tales of heroism.
This is the right place to come to for advice and information about any welding or metal bothering issues.
And a lot more as well.

chunko, as an artist i thought you would appreciate the aesthetics that these old motors had going for them. i had a viva about 20 years ago, it had a linear speedo.

I have watched mates doing up old cars.
It can be funny watching somebody slowly going round the bend. I do like the end results but balls to getting involved myself.
However I might be getting a motorbike in a box.......
