I did something similar many years ago, made it out of a broom handle cut into lengths and glued together. Routed out a pocket to take a cheap clock mech with a plain white face, painted the wood red and added a few coiled bits of wire to the top.

I did similar with a broom handle wrapped in red parcel tape and black insulating tape with a couple of coiled wires in the top. Cable tied it under a mates car before he went for an Mot!

We actually tied gun powder charges under a mates car with a remote control. Also a remote controlled kill switch on the ignition. Blew the charges when he passed and killed the engine. That was the beginning of his bachelor party.
