Noise cancelling headphones?

Here's the problem, the kids at work love having the radio on at full chat, the content (other than the woke agenda on Radio1) doesn't bother me, the level of it does. I've tried the usual earplugs and they dull it but it's a PITA having to take at least one of them out to hear anyone talking to me. Any better ideas? I've already considered contacting PRS anonymously, glueing the volume control in place and poking my eardrums out with a TIG tungsten....

It's a vehicle workshop with lots of sound reflective surfaces I've run a sound pressure level meter for a few weeks, it's below the peak noise levels but it's difficult to hear anyone - my ears are not great due to a lot of years around bang-sticks etc. anything that most people would consider 'loud' basically is similar to having crisp packets mangled inside my head. Trying to quantify that in a way that can be measured isn't something I can do. So it's down to me to manage it as my problem.

learn to lip read , and keep the plugs in .
I had a pair of custom made ear plugs that reduced sound levels by 12db but also kept the response the same as it was , they were great , but would gather dirt if used at work ,,, most folk in the ents game lip read , it gets to the point you can lip read in the dark and across the stage easily ,,,
the wrong station at work is no fun ,,, how about doing a time share , your morning their afternoon ,,, and they will be glad to trim the level if they dont like the music .

First tell him or her that the volume is beyond reasonable and detrimental to production. If no consideration is given to you, I'd cut the end of the plug off.

The rule of thumb is if you have to raise your voice to effect conversation when stood 1 m apart then the noise level is above 85dB.

At this level there is a very strong likilihood of noise induced hearing loss, irrespective of what the source of noise is

The problem with that is i'm a Diag. tech, I'm expected to help others and lip-reading isn't always possible, perversely, if it's too quiet, my brain kicks tinnitus into play... The filter-spinners have their own little clique, it's not just me that they irritate but they are vocal enough to get the ear of the workshop controller, so.... Yep, the problem is a 'social' one, there's a lot of issues - not all unique to where I work, most are endemic in the trade and would have been robustly resolved not that many years ago. I need to do something to preserve my sanity before I do something they'll regret

I've made my point a couple of times by working in the carpark - which has been noticed, I always say 'I need to be able to concentrate' as the justification, which isn't a lie, or an exaggeration.

This is intrusive, however, no-one else will speak up about it, despite over 50% of the workshop whining about it to each other. So for my sanity, I think either a jammer or noise cancelling earphones are the way forward for me. A jammer would be fun but potentially problematic in terms of continued employment (despite everything above, it is a job I enjoy), a big pair of headphones with 'lalalalala can't hear you' tippex'd onto them would send a message.

not an easy situation , and very hard to get the balance just right.You need a corner to yourself , ideally with a partition , but that probably wont happen.

I guess I come from a different world, it would be an easy situation for me; I'd stand up for myself. But here is a possible solution, suggest to the management that those who wish to listen to loud music get their own radio headphones.

The problem is I do stand up for myself, but with no vocalised backup, it becomes just my opinion - and with three or four 'opinions' that say it's OK, then i'm the troublemaker, not them. Two, maybe three of them have a history of rounding on individuals who won't dance to their tune, unfortunately they have (somehow) the ear of the workshop controller. I'm playing the long game with the general manager but in the meantime, for my own sanity, I want to get some noise cancelling headphones...

That's why I'm looking at a hardware solution, it'll get noticed over time and give me a bit of respite until one of the silent complainers decides to grow a pair...
I'd love to give the protagonists a good waterboarding - I'd even forgo my dinner break for it, for some reason it's frowned upon in civvy street....
