Looks like one of those funny horizontal Briggs & Stratton motors maybe.
Motor is toast with that extra window on it.
The rest of the Mower looks pretty tidy - but trying to get, plus the cost of - a new Motor might be the death of it.
(I seem to recall hearing that the V-Twin Briggs wasn't all that special, and that "putting a leg out of bed" wasn't uncommon)

I wonder if it is even worth that.
Unless you really want one, your decision should be driven by the potential resale value. My seat of the pants estimate is you'll be throwing a couple of hundred quid at that at least. Plus a couple of weekends you won't see again.
Think those Mountfields weren't a lot different to the older Wheel Horse things?
If so, and it's a belt drive to the transmission, then in theory you could shoehorn any lump in there with a bit of ingenuity?
Lister TS1 or TS2 Diesel lump anyone?
Or how about a Kohler Command petrol - they are tough lumps, or the ubiquitous Honda GX390? Maybe a Yanmar L100 diesel.
(I'm thinking a single cylinder lump, cos anything 2-cyl is much bigger money. You could always run a different pulley ratio to compensate fir the loss of 5 - 8 or so Dobbins?)

Only 166cc - the lawn tractor one is I think 432cc. That ebay one might be OK for a small push Mower, but not for a ride-on.looks like a china copy engine ?

I would say get it whatever! I am no expert but I work on four,Mountfields and like them, they seem to hold their value and im sure its worth putting another engine in.
If not break it for parts, even the grass collectors sell for good money.

If the deck is in good order its worth the bother , if the deck is poor step on . something usually turns up with an ok engine and a rotten deck after that its usually a fair bit of messing to get things to work ,, but easier looking at it than looking for it. , if nothing else the wheels would make a trailer for a quad or some other project along the way.

That would be my typical response (if I had the transport) but the question does hint at the hidden "costs" of having yet-another-project sitting there glaring at you. Daring you to actually get around to doing something about it.
Is it a project too far? No one else can really answer that other than to suggest if you've got to ask, you probably already know.

Definitely makes a difference. I would skip that engine and put a decent second hand engine on it.
