Now that's a log splitter!

Took this today in a mates workshop, turn it vertical and it will be a log splitter - one day!

Very impressive looking but is it not just a little bit OTT for log splitting? - what size ram is he planning on using on that beast? it's going to need an equally huge pump and engine to run it too. I kind of look at it like normspanners in that you'd likely buy at least a winters worth of pre-split wood or coal for what that splitter will cost by the time it's finished - but I know that's not the point the satisfaction of building something that big and seeing it working must make it all worthwhile. Please keep us updated on the build Neil it makes my log splitter look like a toy and would love to see finished and being put to good use.

Yeah looks a bit massive, mines half that size and happily splits an 18" deep 36"+ wide stump/log slice in half with little effort powered by the tractor.

It it possibly for splitting chestnut spiles for stock fencing? I have a friend with one with perhaps 6 foot 'daylight' under the splitting maul that he uses for just that purpose. Large posts are either quartered or halved depending on their girth after he has bark stripped them on a hideously dangerous whirling cheese grater sort of thing. Both are driven off his tractor (Fordson Major Roadless)

He works at the local scrapyard and has the use of the workshop evening and weekends.
Steel is scavenged from the yard, he has a JD 2850 tractor to run it on. He bought a manufactured log splitter but it tries to twist on the big logs so he decided to make a proper one.
The ram(s) will be dipper rams from JCB 806 or similar. I'm trying to persuade him that he doesn't need a 6cyl ford D engine to power the splitter so I can put it into a Fordson Major project.



Another mate has this for splitting trunks to go into processor.

Nice idea having a hydraulic adj. horizontal adjuster but it must be a B******d to keep the logs on the bar

how about making a stop shaped like the trivial pursuit cheese, that way you can multi chop each log into chestnut pailings and skin at the same time, or only have to run one stroke of the ram to make 6 logs etc

Some more progress on the build. Second ram centre still to be repaired, but is machined into place.
A virtual pint to the one who can guess the weight so far......

Thats standard on large industrial splitters.

Most would be horizontal & part of a processor.

i would presume the builder has done his homework on the stresses on the frame which is substantial and would know the tonnage needed on the 2 rams to carry out the process

They are JCB digger rams, from a large 360, they are 60mm diameter shafts!
