I use a mixture of different size drawer units for different things. It partly depends on how often you're going to want to access them and how many of each size you're going to keep in stock. If you're only going to access them occasionally, then the little storage boxes that look like this are a good option:
I started out keeping nuts & bolts etc in the plastic organiser units you can see mounted on the wall at the top and left of the following picture. Now I just have nails, washers and M2/M2.5/M3 stuff in them. The left-hand red unit (from machine mart) you can see at the bottom left of the picture is what I use now. Most of the drawers are divided into three compartments; some are just a single big drawer.
I have drawers in each row as a given size of screw (M4, M5, M6, M8 and M10), with compartments for each length of screw (e.g. the top left drawer says "M4 8 mm / 10 mm / 12 mm"). Every row has one (single compartment) drawer labelled (e.g.) "M8 Rummage" for the (usually longer) sizes that don't get used very often. It works well for me, but then I get through a lot of socket head cap screws so I tend to buy them in bags of 50+ so I've always got sizes in stock when needed.
I was in IKEA the other day and saw these and thought they might make a good alternative to Lin bins for light workshop use. Easy enough to make up some rails to hang them on (or buy the ones from IKEA)
sorting cases from b&m: £4 apiece.
to make a cabinet for them, 72mm steel studding makes perfect runners.
or clip lock sandwich boxes from Asda: £1.50 each.
asda also do a 2-pack of smaller for £1 - £1.50 (they go on special a lot). just big enough for a pack of screws - or nuts.
i also bought some smaller "wham" brand storage cases which are quite useful.
drawer runners in this case are made from 25x25mm pvc angle from selco.
for bulkier stuff, "Really Useful Boxes" (brand name) in a range of sizes from 3l to 35l.
I used those for years, only criticism of them is you have to weld/tack any partitions etc into them , even a rivet head into the draw floor will catch on the draw below. Good value.
