OCV: 60 Volts or 90 Volts?

My arc welder has selections for two open circuit voltages and being an arc-novice; I`m wondering which are the advantages and disadvantages in using either the 60 V. or the 90 V., seeing as the welder has selectors showing that it yields the same output current values at both OCV`s?

As a general rule the higher the OCV the easier it is to strike an Arc. Some speacial rods require high ocv's 75 +, general purpose rods normally require 50v.
if its a big old transformer type like an oxford, setting to a higher ocv reduces the amperage output.

Yes, put it on the lower voltage one for standard electrodes. 50 or 60v

My personal preference was always for the higher voltage irrespective of the rod type... easier to strike and ran more smoothly.

Why not try the same rods at each setting and see which you prefer?

60 volt should be ample for general purpose (6013 etc). 90 volt can be a pain when breaking the arc - too much movement required. Conversely, long welding cables or specialist electrodes - the higher voltage is very useful. W/A

Yeah, my Airco (90V) will keep an arc up to about 1.5" A real pain when you reach the end as you have to pull away quickly or else blow through the end.
