Oh what a day...

I have had (another) one of those weeks where I cock up more than I produce. Today's gem was trying the tighten the hot end and managed to short the heater to deck. Cue magic smoke escape from the motherboard, bit strangely it didn't take out the fuse. No physical damage to the MOSfets either but it does appear that the ARM processor has had a meltdown...

I did have a browse at complete new printers but to find something comparable to the build I have will cost a lot of money. I have twin Z, Micro Swiss and BL Touch on a reasonable size print bed. Even Creality's version is over £400! Looked at the Anker A5 but it appears to be having a few teething troubles 12 months after launch. The new Creality K1 appears to offer nothing I don't already have and both of those printers are £600 ish.

Have you considered swapping over to a new motherboard and keeping the hardware? I got a BIQU one on my non-branded Creality clone and after a lot of effort it works like a treat. Not that expensive either but it's definitely quite a bit of work once you consider marlin firmware etc.

That is what I have decided to do. Hopefully it will arrive tomorrow, then the fun and games start with finding the right firmware. Direct extruder, BL touch and twin Z. It would be good if I could find that the top temperature hasn't been restricted to 260C. I can see me having to start with source code and tweak it.

Is it just the micro that looks like it's gone?

From memory that package doesn't have a ground pad under it so an easy way to take it off is cut through all the pins with a scalpel (as close to the IC as possible) and then pull it out of the way and then desolder the pins.

Of course you'd still need to find the software to program it up after replacing it but their SWD protocol only requires two pins to be hooked up (other than power) to program it.

I have marlin on a silent creality board and it's great.

Today the board turned up so I carefully installed it. Result was lots of beeping and no display. OK, firmware update required so I went and found the right version and loaded it. The only difference that made was to stop the beeping so I then rewrote the firmware for the display. Still no change. I went through the circuit diagram and all seemed well. Then I thought I would do the motherboard firmware again, only now it won't load because it needs a different filename each time. That done, it then started up in Chinese, so that took a few minutes to sort out.

All good I thought, but then the nozzle refused to heat. Further investigation showed the thermistor O/C so that is now on order and hopefully I can set it up tomorrow.
