just got some compressor oil from machine mart as recomended from a few people on this site when i did a seach
mine compressor is a 200ltr belt drive fiac, the oil i got from MM was sae 40, says its a motor oil for most 4 strokes on the front, aswell as saying compressor oil

not sure if its the right stuff, i couldnt even get it in the pump as it was just so thick, as soon as i poured a little bit in, it got spat back out with a big air bubble, i dont see it being suitable for a spash feed application, its like treakle

Problem is it's too damn cold.
Try warming the oil container in a pan of boiling water before pouring in, should help.
The oil may seem thick now but when the compressor gets warm it'll be nearer the consistency of water. Most machines seem to use single grade rather then the multigrade oils like car engines.
I've heard stories of people having trouble getting the compressor to turn over at all in really cold weather without warming the casing with a lamp or heat gun.

Like stormin says...probably the cold. Took about 5 minutes yesterday for my compressor to get up to speed.

you make a good point there, it did sit in the garage all night untill i tried to put it in today.
not good news about not turning over in the cold as my compressor is in a seperate building next to my workshop, purpose made just for it as its to noisey inside

dont under stand why it says its a motor oil for 4 strokes but says compressor oil on the front

It's OK for both engines & compressors, but being single grade and non-detergent it wouldn't be any good for modern engines.

I use their SAE 30 in my compressor

maybe you should of gone for the sae 20 grade , esp if its in a cold outhouse

emailed MM last night before i made this post and the responce i got today was the same as what the people on here mentioned, they said they is should have tried the sae 30, to late to send this one back as i have already opened it, will it be ok to use, just heat it up before i put it into the pump as the cold has made it alot thicker?

I'd get some 30 and do an oil change then put the 40 in next summer, or just use it in the oilcan for general lubrication about the workshop.

I've got 30 in both my compressors and they were fine this morning.

will the ingersol rand be ok till the end of the month, will only use it a few times till

my comps ran on 20 -50 or whatevers available for last 30 years

as long as its reasonably thick ish
and not like p ,.,./,./s water should be ok . sumone will sharp coment if it isnt it would run at a fair lick in a screw comp

Why don't they spec a multigrade? Seems odd. Whats the benefit these days of running a mono?

Got me thinking about mine now, they live in a separate building, although haven't had any probs as yet in winter.

got 5 litres of the sealey compressor oil. it is also sae 40 but it is so much thinner than the machine mart stuff. the screw compressor oil semmed to be to thin as it seemed to use alot, dont think the piston is at fault at it still builds up preasure in around 7 mins, this is 250 litre on a single piston pump to 130psi

Screw oil is much thinner at about sae 20 grade.

got the oil changed today and feel much better using this stuff, can fill the take in 6 mins, when i drain the tank i get alot of mist coming out from under my compressor shed, not sure if this was oil vapour, or steam as the air is hot?

Don't go by the viscosity you see as it's poured , it's unrelated to how it lubricates in the compressor. They don't need thick oils anyway , they run at relatively low speed and much lower loads than an internal combustion engine.
