Old Apollo HVLP needs new gun

All,

I have been offered an old Apollo HVLP turbine system. I intend to have a go at spray in my mini in 2pack epoxy to give it some rust protection. While i footer around with it.

Problem is, the gun on the apollo is knackered. I'm sure i read somewhere that due to fittings, i need to get another apollo gun.

Can anyone confirm this or alternativley recommend another gun i can use?

It depends upon the age of the unit, some have removable fixings, some have fixed fittngs that are reasonably propriatary - although the connector can be cut off the end of the hose and another type fitted.

A number of HVLP guns can be made to fit, depending upon the type, for the cost involved it may best to buy the correct gun directly from them, the manufacturers website is

Never had a go with one of those how good or bad are they ?
Do a fair amount of 2 pack in small quantities at present, small sections but long, lot of waste\over-spray would be good if I could cut it down without loss of quantity finish

I can not comment on spraying 2 pack, I mostly apply laquers to wood with my spray setup plus I have finished a couple of cars using cellulose single pack paint.

Firstly there is a big difference between some of the spray systems, I have previously used an Apollo 1500 3 stage turbine system and now have the Apollo 1200 2 stage turbine. both are only rated as light trade use but in my experience:

The HVLP systems tend to give much better deposition as there is a lot less of the paint bouncing back off the surface compared with using a standard HP spray system, for the work I have done the HVLP finish is as good as the HP system, plus it has the advantage that the air tends to be quite warm. I have tried a few thicker paints in an HVLP system and they do not work at all (although I should probably not have been spraying anything so thick using anything other than an airless system anyway)

There is a noticable difference between the 1500 and 1200 Apollo units, mainly due to the quality of the gun supplied.

Personally I have no plans to go back to a high pressure system, not particuarly due to the savings in paint etc (which you will have to do a lot of spraying to make up for the cost of the HVLP system) but more for the improved working environment having less solvents etc in the air, which I do the work at home translates to less solvents making their way into the living areas.

p.s. if you do ever find yourself wanting to finish a lot of wood in winter, then the warm air off an HVLP system allows you to spray in sub zero conditions and still have the laquer dry within a few seconds without blooming - probably useless information!

Thanks no information is useless, even if it only makes me seem more knowledgeable 2 pack is not that thick so may be worth a go less fumes are always good, + less cleaning etc.
Would still like to hear if someone has used 2P in one either version or any other HVLP

I think it was discussed in http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=32669&highlight=hvlp, Dev inspired me to buy a HVLP but I have not used it for anything other that painting walls and ceilings.

I just checked with my father and he has sprayed cars using a 2 pack metalic paint and clear laquer. Most recently a mkII Jag that we have restored. He was using what would not be the 1500 pro (1.5kw 3 stage turbine) and he had no problems, although it takes longer to do (no bad thing unless you are a pro)
