Old Broom and Wade Compressor Help

Hi, I bought this old compressor from a local flee market for £20, its a Broom and Wade, V2, 150psi. I have fancied getting into spraying for a while, cellulose paints and the likes for doing up old machinery, but, what I know about compressors and spraying you could write on the back of a postage stamp. Therefore has anyone any ideas about whether this machine is suitable, or have I just bought something heavy?. Would this have sat on top of a tank?, what kind of spraying equipment would I need to get up and running to do basic spraying tasks. If no one feels in a mentoring mood then can any one point me towards any books on the subject, vintage machinery and engineering books are another interest of mine, cheers, Tommy.

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be on soon, but in the mean time I would suggest it might be worth persevering with. I have a similar Broom Wade compressor, although mine is direct drive not belt, and although hard to gauge from the pictures I think slightly smaller. I have recently sprayed a car with mine, although frustrating it is definitely possible. I started off with my lovely Devilbiss JGA series gun, but it just used too much air, so I bought one of the £10 cheapo mini spray guns from ebay, and although not as nice, I was pleasantly surprised by the finish it was possible to get with it. I used an empty 19kg propane cylinder as a receiver for my compressor as the original had holes in, and I was grateful for the extra volume. Doing individual panels wasn't a problem at all, while spraying the entire body there were several times I ran out of air and had to wait a few minutes for the compressor to catch up.

So it depends a bit what you want to do, spraying is definitely possible with it, as long as you know the limitations. I would suggest starting with this as you already have it, and you can always upgrade to a larger compressor at a later date if you find you need it.

i have nigh on the same one - and with a large tank it is possible to spray with it. The most important thing with spraying is cleanliness before the gun so get a descent moisture filter and possibly a oil mist one too. A dedicated airline is also worthwhile.

by the looks of it yours probably sat on a upright tank

Thanks for the reply, I cant see myself spraying a car at the moment, more like parts of stationary engines/ machinery. I think I need a book on the subject as I really am a beginner at it all. It came with a length of copper pipe with two nuts on either end which I am not sure is/ was for?, also what is the brass cylinder part of the compressor that is next to the air filter? a water trap?, many thanks guys.

they were mainly used in garages for pumping tires up on the forcourts it will spray if u put a large enough tank on it but only with a pannel spraygun

Think that's probably an unloader valve, they can be used instead of a regular compressor switch if your using it continuously and its frequently start/stopping the motor to run up to the set pressure it puts a lot of strain on the motor, using the unloader instead of the switch simply opens a valve on the head so the pump is free of any load then the motor isn't having to drive anything. The valve closes when the tanks pressure drops to the set point and so on.
