On site welding

finally got to do some proper on site welding today (sun work unfortunately) with my mosa 200 welding generator (this machine worked superbly and im well happy with the purchase) i was wondering what people who do on site work do regarding safety helmets-did'nt bother today as site was empty but safety helmet wont go over my welding mask easily
working in an industrial unit welding on a bench is a million miles away from real site work on a cherry picker, swaying around and trying to maintain a steady bead!
i am a big fan of bohler welding rods and typically use the ohv 3.2's with a small weave on horizontal fillets but today i tried the ETI's 3.2, these were a treat to use, as they could be forced into the corner of the fillet and dragged along to produce a perfect fillet
all good fun and still enjoyable anyway

Most site agents realise that wearing a hard hat whilst welding is mostly impracticle.
A few of the biiger names do hard hat based headshields, such as speedglass, jackson, esab.
They dont com cheap mind.
I havnt got one, or even know anyone that uss them tbh.

In my experience, as long as you have either your hard hat on or your welding screen you are ok. I know times when we have been a hard hat short, so one of the lads has worn his welding screen - flipped up - on site all day with no questions asked!
I don't know anyone who has a helmet-mounted welding screen either.

The same as Paul in quarries..... if you've got a welding screen on they don't seem to be too bothered about no other head protection.
Got a handy tinted flip up face shield that fits a hard hat when burning though.

I've worked for some real brilliant sites "brilliant said with a grimace" over the years and only once have i been asked to wear a hard hat under the mask,this i done-easy,place hard hat on head then ask how am i suppose to weld??????????.
Didn't half baffle the idiot,anyway i've worked with a lad who's used one of those hard hat adaptors..His words were never again.......
Generally as sites go,as long as you have your hard hat with you there isn't an issue.

Here in the US there hard hat crazy, they will sack you in a flash for not wearing one, the hats that accept the shields just are plain crap and uncomfortable.

My way out is to get two hard hats, one for normal use, the second I make from cardboard a shield with a lens in and I duck tape it all over, over the cardboard I layer either cut slices of old leather gloves or an old leather jacket for protection, it looks similar to a soft shield.

I look like a Darlek but being comfortable is the most important thing.

I have a speedglas hardhat/welding mask in one (cant remember the model number as the mask is at work). I bought it from Ebay and didnt realise it had a hardhat til it arrived. I stuck with it thinking 'oh well at least I have it if I ever find myself doing site work'. I actually find it quite comfortable and it has become my everyday mask when at work. it has saved me a few times when getting up and banging my head on the frames I build. Im happy with it. The only one dissapointment is that it doesnt flip down with a nod of the head, which isnt a mahor problem as it is autodarkening.

Hard hat crazy? Doesn't apply to those guys doing 'Monster Moves' then. Walking around under propped up masonry in nothing more than T-shirt and shorts!
Must admit I do like the atitude of those guys, they get on and do the job. Over here there would be 2 years of form filling and general bullsh*t, by which time the building would have been demolished! W/A
