Hello all together!
After reading here for several months I took the plunge and registered to support the forum.
I'm from Germany and welding is just a hobby to me. Nevertheless I'm a real tool junkie. I have a Fronius transformer Mig and a Cemont stick inverter, both 3-phase/400V, a small single phase Cemont stick inverter and a Cebora plasma cutter are also available. Several angle grinders in all sizes, several belt sanders, a small metal bandsaw, a small lathe (milling machine at work)...

My biggest projects so far have been a bed frame and a massive fold-up welding table afterwards. Sure, would have been smarter the other way around, but I needed the new bed first.
I wish I had more time for welding and more space for more tools...

I think I will start with the welding table, they seem to be an all time favorite on all welding forums.

Welding tables are good - I reckon you need at least a 10mm top for them to be sensible. Mine is about 15mm and it's very useful for hammering things on. But I've never really understood the concept of welding tables apart from them not catching fire - it can be handy to connect the earth clamp to the table, place your work on top and weld away, though it only works when everything is clean.

Edit> I see your post - you've already made one. So what is the concept behind them? I use mine for hammering.

The concept behind them? Well, you get a strong, heat resistant work bench, a (hopefully) flat base where you can clamp the parts on...

Forget that. Do I really need such a heavy duty table? No, my life doesn't depend on it. A 5 mm plate on a B&D workmate could do the job for most people. But I like it. It is fun to create such a thing that perfectly fits your needs (read taste), and it gives you a good feeling to work on a table designed and made completely by yourself.
Yes, I have a tendency to overengineer things.
