Open or shut

This is just the refill loop on a boiler. Is the left hand valve open or shut in this picture?

Obviously the valve on the right is closed but the angled valve in the other side is ambiguous in my eyes.

easy way to well turn the other tap on and see if your water pressure goes up a bit you can always release a bit out one on the rads in the system

looking at the way its plumbed. it could be a "Y" valve, so its open to the normal circuit while vertical, and open to the fill circuit when horizontal

Yes that is my understanding but the valve is on the side of a right angle fitting.

Which is the correct, closed, position for normal operation after it has been opened for refilling?

Place your bets. Must admit, I am surprised no one is offering a definitive answer here….

My guess is the valve is open to the closed loop of the system and closed to the mains water inlet in this three way junction.

That should be the correct setting for normal operation. If I was to “test” it by seeing/hearing what happens when I change the setting, I am not sure the test would be conclusive and am hoping it would be obvious to someone who “knows”.

Is that right? So bleeding a radiator of Air will require a top up at the boiler.

if you have a lot of air in the system normaly only after a emptying or removing a rad or after a longer period of time


and if you put to much water in asystem its supprising how much you have to remove to get the pressure down

Yes, top the pressure up. Don't be too worried about over pressure

Valve on left looks like combined isolation valve so in that position it's water to boiler IE domestic, turning it will send water to filling loop, you then turn r/h valve to fill system, as valves stand they are both in correct position.


As was said earlier easy way to confirm is remove loop or read instructions for boiler.

Two weeks ago my dad had a non working radiator. Bit of heat at the bottom.
I bled it.....not a great deal of air came out. But enough as in seconds the heat was all over the rad.

Today he had no hot water... brother in law had to increase pressure in the boiler...


Wondered if I was coincidence??
