Open root 6013

Guys I need help...Im struggling with doing a root pass in flat and vertical plate with 6013..I either burn a massive uncontrollable keyhole or I'm not getting any penetration..it goes from one extreme or the other for me...my hot pass and cap are perfect...but root pass is driving me bananas

I'm using 2.5 gap and foot face 2.5 6013 on 10 mill plate at about 82 amps dc+...I've tryed dc- ..still d same!

Any advice..how do u guys do it? Manipulate puddle? Control key hole?

At work, the root pass is usualy put in with tig then a hot pass with tig and then the fill and cap is done using 7018 rods (A2)

im trying the learn the same setup at the moment.if there is a full 2.5mm gap about 65 amps dc- does it.if the gap gets narrower due to shrinkage i could add up to 10 more amps

Is that gap getting narrower due to expansion, not shrinkage ? (Im asking. not stating)

i thought as weld cools it shrinks,pulling the two plates closer

What size rod are you using for your root pass at 82 amps?

The root gap and root face sound a bit big. Some 6013s wont do a decent root. Usually the best ones are those that need higher OCVs....Vodex type

So I started playing around with it again! When I was first doing it I would use a 2.5 mm rod as a spacer then I would put 2 heavy tacks on rack end to hold..I think the reason I was lacking penetration is the glint would get closer together due to tacks cooling so I would loose the original 2.5mm space ..so I started using 3.2m rod as a spacer do when tacks cool the space would shrink to 2.5 root gap I would want..

Anyway I kept working on it and I think I crack it...I keep a low amperage and give the 6013 a little weave...

Seems to work..il work at it again tommorow

I know exactly how you feel. On my C&G I could not get a good root pass for love nor money. Same problems as you. Either burn through or not enough pen. No matter what i did. In the end i tried a 6010 and after a few tries it worked. After I'd done that i eventually got the 6030 to work, but it took maybe a solid 6 hours of practice. ie: two entire evening classes !!

any reason for useing 6013? try useing lincoln fleetweld 5P+

6013's are more than do-able, check your gap (2.5) root face (2.5) amps to suit, arc length, tilt angles, SOT...................

So anyway 1g 6013 root pass is driving me crazy..I've tryed it about 30 times...still messing it up...bit here's the funny bit...

I tryed a 3G open butt with 6013..boom...absolutely perfect! 100 perfect penetration the whole way..nice hot pass and cap then! I find real easy to pull puddle up though joint and control keyhole...my prep is the same as 1g..and my amps are about 5 less...but I can't do 1g...is 1g not ment to be easier?

We used 6011 celuosic for the root, then 6013's for the fill and cap. Much easier to handle the root with them than it was the 6013's.
