outdoor welding table project .... 8x4ft

i have to weld outdoors as my outbuilding is my gym and has no space for it.
i will build a lean to roof off my house so it has some protection from the elements, and maybe a a welding blanket that wraps around the roof to block off wind affecting my gas.

but, im stuck on how to bring in the steel sheet through the house and in to the garden, i was thinking a 10mm 8x4ft sheet, at 230kg i dont think ill manage moving the thing.

what would people suggest for the top?

knock up a little two wheeled trolley that you can sit the sheet in, so it sits on its 8ft edge then wheel it through your house.

What about 2 x 5mm sheets welded on the edges and a few strategic holes drilled in the top sheet and ground flat after welding. Having said that 5mm braced would probably be cheaper.

Its not really the weight of the thing im thinking would be the problem, more the awkwardness of an 8x4 sheet of steel through door openings,
I like the two 5mm sheets stacked and puddle welded idea,sent my supplier over an email to see how much £££, if its too much I suppose I could opt for something a little thinner at 6mm.

Wont be using it for anything tooo big, just building power racks, benches, bars etc.

If as you mention the weight is manageable I would cut a few short lengths of round hard wood or scaffolding tube and just roll it along, if you have to make a turn then a bit of ply to protect the floor and a crowbar would ease it around in small moves.

For welding on I find a workbench without a solid top better,with say 2x2 box 18 inches apart. easy to clamp things on to and you can have a small bit of heavy plate clamped or bolted any where on the top of your 8x4 frame for small welding jobs ....jeff...

Cut the steel into 12" strips, and mount (clamp/bolt) to a couple of RSJs, like a BuildPro table
you have the ease of movement for each piece, gaps so plenty of room for clamps, make a bigger gap so a protruding part of a project can fit between.
If you bolt the top down, you can level each individual piece with shims, so you don't need to have it ground - or even if you do, it might be easier -
if one plate gets damaged, you can replace it or have it reground.

Would be a perfect that way, but im actually planning on having a closed cabinet sort of set up under it so all sides will be coverd, with doors on the front for my welder and tools to be locked up.
Not ideal but no space in the house to just leave a big welder etc
Will see how much the 2 5mm steel sheets cost when my supplier gets back to me.

You could keep big eggs idea,but enclose the lower section in say 1.5mm.

What about steel grating? I never weld any small peices.
The prices for the steel plate were in the £200 region, there are 2x1m 6mm cheq plate on ebay for 30 quid a sheet but 100+ miles away
