overhead 6013

am i right in thinking that the amps should be set roughly the same as on flat, and you should have a pretty much perpendicular rod angle for overhead with 6013?

joint in question would be a butt joint on 8mm steel...my father has an RSJ running down the length of one of his sheds for hanging things off and he wants a few tabs welded on to put lights on

no adjustment on my stick welder for arc force unfortunately but it does have it in some form. i will be running a 3.2 rod at about 120 amps as even though he says its only to hook lights over it will more than likely end up with more hanging off it

Use 1 mm tabs, as an insurance.

we are using what we have...pretty much the thinnest stuff we have in the right sort of size is 8mm...i have some 2mm but its no where near big enough for the tabs or enough of it for the number of tabs

he uses the RSJ to hang petrol tanks on to spray them, bike panels and the odd car door too...lighting is a pain but even with good quality LED lights he still needs a hand held lamp to get a good look at everything to make sure there are no runs, or he hasnt missed anything. with that though i can almost gurantee there will eventually be a bonnet or door hanging off one of the tabs when he hasnt got space left (he is planing on new bonnet and rear doors on his jag) so the stronger the better

Slightly less amps than for downhand but not by much (probably a little less than 120 for a 3.2, I'd try 110-115 and see how the rod likes it) and I like a few degrees of drag.
Tbh it isn't difficult or all that much different to downhand.

i have one in my garage too might weld some tabs onto my one beats G clamps, get a head torch for him they are ace

he has a head torch for fishing but he prefers using an insepction lamp.

i dont do much downhand with stick, i have done it in the past and remember it to be relatively easy so will cut some scraps and try that first

Downhand = flat
Downhill = vertical down (6010/11 territory, AKA Stoving)

fair enough...overhead seems like its not going to be too much of a problem then. going over later to make some space in the shed so nothing cathces fire and probably weld it all tomorrow

Overhead 7016 1/8... see my rod angle, kind of 45 to the joint and dragging a fair bit. Using the arc force to push the metal up in there. I was actually just jamming the rod in and letting it burn off, having a decent slope to the power source means you can do that without the arc going out.

thats for a fillet though? i will be doing butt welds so would need to straight in to the joint with a bit of drag?

Ah, sorry, yes that is a fillet. You'd go straight in with a bit of drag as you say.
