Overloading motor?

Hi all, I've got a decentish 50l comp with 14cfm output etcetc but I'm looking at buying another 150l tank for extra capacity, do you think this will put too much strain on the motor? The only advantage is that I work at a company that supplies motors so if it does go I can upgrade maybe.

You should be OK. I run my compressors continuously for over an hour at a time without any problems. Just make sure you've got plenty of air circulating round the motor & pump. I've added extra fans to mine because they're in a bit of a tight place.

If it's a decent motor with a good duty cycle rating, can't see as it should be any problem. It's only a crappy motor, or a motor stuck somewhere where it's likely to overheat with prolonged use, which would be likely to suffer.

I am after motor for a milling machine 4 pole 5hp 3 phase 240V, the original was a 112L body. It was an iron motor that was run from 0 rpm to 6,000, I don't expect to get a generic motor to do this though. Don't suppose you have something. no rush.

That's 200hz! Where do you find an inverter to do that? (and why?............)

I work on a lot of equipment that is 220V 3ph at 400Hz (not allowed to say what though) a 5hp motor is no bigger than a role of kitchen paper

They used HF grinders in the foundry where I worked in the 70's, inverters hadn't been invented then! had to use a motor-generator set

But the tools are the best, you cant stop the blade spinning on a HF angle grinder!

The power out of a HF motor is huge! A lot of high end woodwork kit is HF there is a couple of different converter sets at work one is about the size of a small car

Problem is the price of the tools, last angle grinder i bought was a 12" jobbie and set me back £1300 for a recon! It is a fein though

Wanna bet one of my jobs was repairing HF grinders, if the fettlers wanted a break they would wedge the wheel into the casting then turn it on and hold it until something burnt out. Used to take anything from 30 mins for me to repair them until I got organised, then I could pull a spare off the shelf which meant they had go staight back to work

I drove someone over to repair a HF unit at Dunsfold, they had 400hz tools.

That's 200hz! Where do you find an inverter to do that? (and why?............)

The inverters I have bought will do 200hz, don't think the motors you buy will go anywhere near that though.
There isn't a gearbox on the spindle so a wide speed range requires a lot of Hz. Th problem is the original motor seems to need the original drive, the voltage amps will be part of it, 200hz figures on the motor plate are 178V and something like 36A. I asked Yaskawa about drives and they suggested I either use the original drive or fit an alternative motor. I did wonder if a re-winder could re-wind it so it suited a standard VFD. The original drive was the size of a small fridge and judging by the huge heatsink wasn't to efficient, so I flogged it, oh and it wanted 200V 3phase input.


The motor will run to 10,000 rpm, I imagine you would have paid extra for the 10,000 rpm option. I was reading a post on CNC zone and someone had inquired if it was still available[this is an 80's milling machine], it was and it was something like $3000. The bloke went for it, few days later a matsuura tech comes along and changes a parameter in the controller and the mill has a 10,000 rpm spindle!
