In 1981 I did an industrial welding course at college. The tutor was telling us the safety rules and one was if you get a flashback with the oxy acet then calmly open the side door and wheel the trolley outside. He then felt the door, found it was locked and said forget what he'd previously instructed but to just get out of the building asap !

If I experienced a flashback, I expect my 1st reaction would be to turn off the bottle if I was able. If the flashback reached as far as the regulator I would evacuate the building and call the fire brigade and allow them to assess whether the bottle is safe or not. As far as I am aware, in general, if a flashback enters the bottle, it will cause it to vibrate and heat up. I dont think I would be comfortable until the fire brigade says its safe, though.

I'm reading this and thinking isnt the job of the flashback arrestor to stop it reaching the reg and bottle?

correct .any reverse flow through it and it will trip. ive only ever had to rest mine twice in 30 odd years all that happens when u reset and turn on the torch a puff of soot flies out and your set to go i just got the boc welding and cutting handbook when i rented the bottles tells and shows u all u need to know without going ott. i cant understand why everyones so touchy about using them

A "puff of soot" will be the consequence of a Flashback (almost always caused through incorrect pressure settings/use). Your Arrestors are now defunct & will only operate on reverse gas flow, ie.will not extinguish a flame as the sintered flame extinguishing element has burnt out. Yours are 30 years old... they should be replaced every 5 years! Observers should ignore the above post.

i assume for single shot arrestors, not resettable ones ? or do resettables need the element replacing?

yes please explain why would u get resettable ones if u are not suposed to use them after a burnback ??

Both. "Single shot" - 'Inline' or 'Barrell' - type will withstand minor flashbacks before you need to bin em, Re-Sets can be err...re-set. Both will fail eventually though; main difference is Re-Sets can be phyiscally tested to see if they are still working 100% (needs to be done annually for businesses) inline can't.

Sorry to butt in, but it says you can use them witt ones with compressed air, what would you need to use one for on it.

You need to fit them to the compressed air side of the system when you are using compressed air/acetylene torches
