oxy actylene sets advice

i will soon be getting some cutting equipment. i was wandering whether you can use the acetylene reg on propane. to make it oxy propane or do i need a special reg. i wont be welding with it so i thought i'd better ask your advice first

It will work find but you need an adapter as the fittings are different on both tanks

An acetylene reg is the same left hand threaded fitting as propane cylinder, nozzles are different though, cutting nozzles for propane are a two piece affair and are marked PNM, Acetylene are one piece nozzle and marked ANM

You will need a regulator for propane as the seats are made of different compositions, and hose, tips. If you havent got Flashback Arrestors get a set of them too.

cheers guys. the reg fits. ive got flash back arresters. so i need different tips etc. why hose aswell? i will be using it just to heat things to start with to aid bending it. what do you mean by seats jake? how come i need to change hoses?
normally use oxy acetylene at work but i want a set at home and propane is a bit safer although you cant use it for welding can you??????????

i am going to buy some new flashback arrestors. any advice? dont want to spend 50 quid each though for the resettable ones. just the cheap one would do. can you reccomend any?

Propane rots acetylene hose, should use the proper (orange) stuff really.

Yes, we've got to get new hoses at work as we're changing to oxy propane - Fire brigade told us to get rid of Acetylene!

The seat material that is in an acetylene regulator is made of a different composition than propane. The seat is the part of the regulator that allows the high pressure side flow through to the low pressure chamber, shutting off when it has reached it's set pressure. Different gases affect materials in different ways.

Definitely use proper propane hose, I have seen propane actually melt acetylene hose

First of all if you are using propane then use a propane reg, similarly if using acety then use acety reg. The reason being, as previously mentioned, the main valves are constructed differently(Neoprene face). Also acetylene regs give a max pressure of 22psi (1.5 bar) whereas propane regs normally give 60 psi (4 bar), so to use an acety reg on a propane bottle you would see a difference in working pressure when cutting. Always use acety hose for acety gas and propane hose for propane gas. Propane gas will damage acety hose. Propane hose is constructed with a neoprene inner, whereas acety hose is just plain rubber. Regarding the flashback arrestors they suitable for both acety or propane gases and are usually marked as Fuel Gas Flashback Arrestors

Get two regs and keep them with the correct fuel hoses, inline flash backs are around a tenner, never ever take short cuts with this gear.......mess up and you can end up dead!!!!!!

I always keep an inline set of flash backs at the gun on my cutting set and use resettable at the regs, better safe than ................

thanks again lads. dont know what i'd do without you lot sometimes. where can i get a propane regulator. the only ones i can find are the ones for caravans etc.
could i use just propane when heating or will it give off those lovely black fairies. i dont think it will but better to be 100%

i agree with the previous posts always use the correct equipment for the gas you are using, you can order propane regulators from migtigarc http://www.migtigarc.co.uk/Gas_Welding/gas_welding.html and wellyweld http://www.wellyweld.com/categories/Gas_Equipment_107.aspx they both sell murex regulators which are very nice
