oxy propane brazing.

hey,

is it posable to use a murex saffire 5 with welding nozzles and propane gas? but only for brazing not welding? or are the welding nozzles out if you don't use acetylene?
since getting the tig i see no reason that i'd use my O/A for welding, but may want to braze and will want to cut with it, so just checking if it's welding nozzles can still be safely used? no need to have an £80 a year cylinder sitting around if i could replace it with a calor propane plus fills are cheaper and no collection charge

I use my Victor clone with oxy/propane. Works well and the tips are the same.

For cutting, you will need a tip made for propane. Will use a lot of oxygen though.

yeah I know you need special propane cutting nozzles, just couldn't find anywhere saying the welding nozzles could be used with propane thanks for the info
oxygen use isn't much of an issue as a fill only costs £16.25 + collection £11.35 though I would try to combine cylinder collection, at the moment i'm paying £74.40 rent on an acetylene and £44.90 a fill on it, so I could get about 3 fills in the oxygen every year and still brake even, that's not including the savings of the propane vs acetylene fills just rent, though I am a little loathed to get rid of the acetylene :/ how ever i don't see my self using it a lot, and i'm going for a huge argon on the tig, so i think it'll be cheapest and probably best to just tig stuff for now, and cut/braze with propane.

only issue i have with oxy/prop is heat... on larger section it can be a right pain to get enough heat into the job, even going up 2 sizes, for thin stuff its OK

I assume I could use a rose bud or just the cutting torch for preheating though, I don't do a lot of brazing anyway, and i've never used a nozzle about a 12, apart from to see what a 25 looks like lit haha, brazing is just a handy thing to have in the tool belt and I wouldn't like to lose it

Okay i have a set of propane and oxygen bottles

Some cheap and crappy clark welding nozzles

Some murex Saffire Silicon bronze 1.6mm rods which the bloke in the shop reckoned needed no flux

I've cleaned the metal up so its nice and shiny

But i'm failing spectacularly on the whole brazing stuff together front.

Doing quite well on the whole spattering crap everywhere front

So what am i doing wrong?

afaik you need flux unless the rods are flux coated

unless there flux coated you will get nowhere sounds as if your not heating the metal up enough and the rod is getting 2 hot and blowing away spitting and farting. use flux and keep the blowtorch tip on the metal and feed the rod into the flame and on to the metal gently as it melts. if it blobs and bursts the whole jobs 2 hot

I had a feeling the whole blue flames and exploding part wasn't quite right.

be sparing with the flux if useing liquid as it goes everywere and leaves a messy weld

Always use flux unless the rods are specifically flux coated, and even then still use a bit of flux as (don't know if this is just me) i tend to burn the flux off the rod before it hits the weld pool, so it may not be protected.

Sounds to be like the flame isn't being concentrated enough, you should only have a very small weld pool, and no pops / explosions.

Also, i don't know your technique, but i tend to oxy weld / braze the same as with tig, just heating it up and keeping a constant weld pool, but only dipping the rod into the weld pool (not holding and dragging).
