Oxy Question

Im new to oxy welding ive been practising on my old mans oxy set and just wondering is the Big pop you hear when you turn off the acytelene Bad? ive seen other people just turn the acy off quick and it makes a huge noise.

The shut down procedure should be the reverse of the start up procedure ie
Start up: a little gas, light up increase gas flow, slowly add in oxy, increase gas and oxy whilst keeping the flame neutral
Shut down: Keep the flame neutral as you slowly reduce the flow of oxy and gas, shut off flow of oxy completely at the torch and then shut off the acetylene .....NO Pop!

Are the pops dangerous in any way or is it just that people want to keep a low profile while welding with ancient methods...?
