I always used to use Boc multistage regulators, they used to do service exchange units good quality/price combination.
It depends what your intended use is. if you have short welding sections planned then single stage are Ok but you need to keep an eye on the settings on longer use as the cylinder pressure dropping effects the output pressure/flow.
i personally would say for accurate prolonged cutting sessions Multistage on the oxygen is essential for consistent cut quality.

Just a quick afterthought i presume you will be using BOC cylinders?
I have a http://www.albeegascylinders.com/albee-flame.html for acetylene with a built in regulator and a Hobby weld oxygen.
If i was sticking with hobbyweld oxygen i might consider regulator with side entry.
I wish i could find a add on acetylene regulator as the built in one on the albee flame should come with some sort of on line psychic ability training course. will try to add a photo later if i can.

A few numbers in Bar to align with a mark on brass casting, not very helpful when you want an accurate 2 or 3 psi.(no output gauge just cylinder content).

Yep, realised that but was just pointing out the difference for the benefit of people not in Scotland
need to replace my bottles at the moment and have been going round the houses for the best, found that air liquide do the portapak size bottles with integral regulators. as my regs are also out of date looks like a decent deal for me.
ok the bottles are only 1m3 but for home use, occasional weld with even more occasional cutting, and general heat, they should do fine.
this is in France, so don't know if the uk version has the same option but I'd think they would

I have an albee oxy for carry around with propane for cutting. By crikey it's dear when you exchange even if there is no rental. I try and not use it as a result.
For welding rather than cutting you might not be so bad. I hear of people in the states with different set ups using propane to weld! I never thought it could be suitable but apparently its happening- mind you the main source is Internet

once you've bought them, 290 euros a bottle x 2, ouch ! but the same as a rental for three years for one bottle. Once you have them you own them for life on the exchange the gas is roughly 50 a refill, and obviously the regs are always in date. ok the gas per m3 cost is far higher than normal, but overall I think for non pro use it's within acceptable limits. The distributer is just up the road and is open on the Saturday so suits me. Agreed they wouldn't suit a pro with high usage, but I got fed up of paying rental on all the bottles.
In other words I have enough use to need them, but not enough to justify the rental, to get a cheaper refill price. Already changed over the Argon/co² mix and the argon bottles to the same size (albeit no regs) the Oxy/ acetylene is next.
I consider the high initial cost a long term investment, ultimately it will boil down to your usage.

Not sure without looking it's my small bottle. Is it not a set price on albee? Just remember it's shocking especially considering the size. I need 60 am hour at least using it that's as much as I keep in my head

Jim do you stock the Albee Acetylene or know of any add on regulators? Mine seams very hit and miss for accurately setting the working pressure for welding.

I do stock Albee flame, personally I would make up a T-piece and thread a pressure guage in-line with the hose, however it would be uninsurable and not an item I could supply on to a customer for public liability reasons.

OK Thanks i had been thinking along similar lines. I do have a Y twin outlet adaptor. Just wondered if they made anything. They don't get used often but come in very handywhen you need them. At some point i will get round to getting the matching oxygen, at the moment am using hobbyweld oxygen.

My understanding with regards to using propane for gas welding is that although it is hot enough and can join metal together it does not provide the suitable shielding gas which acetylene does, so the weld might stick but isn't OK - much like running a MIG with the gas supply off.
