Hello,
I'm having a couple of problems painting using 2k direct gloss (mixed 2 to 1, 10% thinner) and would like some pointers if possible.
I'm struggling to get a consistent good finish from the gun and think its a problem getting the gun set up right, or the gun its self. I'm using a Devilbiss FLG 5. I also have a cheap £25 touch up gun with a 0.8mm tip (the Devilbiss has 1.4mm). With the touch up gun I can get it set up well, and I can get a good finish straight from the gun. I just cant seem to get the Devilbiss gun set up right no matter how long I spend on it. I seem to have way too little, or way too much paint - there is no middle ground. Also, the fan isn't very wide, the widest I can get it is around 4 inches.
This is how I try to set the gun up:
I have the air regulator from the compressor set at 55psi for the air fed mask, then I turn the air screw on the bottom of the gun between 1/2 and 3/4 of the way out. Any more and it feels like the pressure is too high to me. I turn the paint screw all the way in, then out around 2 turns.
Then to set the fan I turn the cap so it sprays horizontal to test how it sprays. I have the fan screw all the way in and then work my way out 1/2 tun at a time trying to get an even distribution of paint. This is where I struggle. With the fan screw all the way out, I expected to get an 8 shape (if vertical), with too much paint at the top and bottom, and not enough paint in the middle... but after the first turn, the fan don't seem to change much as the screw is turned out, and all my test sprays seem to have too much paint in the middle, and not enough paint on the top and bottom, and the widest the fan goes is around 4 inches.
Am I setting the gun up wrong? Should the fan go wider? Does it seem like there is too much paint because its not getting spread out over a big enough area?
When I'm painting with the Devilbiss I seem to struggle with either dry patches, or runs/sags. If I overlap 50% and move fairly slow (the speed I get good results with the touch up gun) I will get lots of runs. If I move a little faster or overlap a little less, I get a dry finish. I think there is too much paint coming through but adjusting the paint screw seems to change from all to nothing, no middle ground. I think its to do with the fan width but it may just be my bad technique? But I don't have this problem with the touch up gun. Or am I setting the gun up completely wrong?
I managed to paint the whole car, but I'm not happy with it. I got dry patches and a few runs. The 'good' bits are quite peely.
The Devilbiss is a few years old. Is it time for a new gun, my painting technique, or the way I'm setting the gun up?
Thanks
