Paint mask help!

Hi,

I have just started spray painting and come across the dangers of isocyante, I am confused about the right precautions to take and want to avoid going out and spending several hundred on equipment I do not need.

Can I use a mask such as the this?

Or do I need to buy an air fed mask? If I need an air fed mask, my current compressor is 50L, 2.5hp and 7.2cfm. I presume that will only support my spray gun.

Is there a air fed mask that will have it's only power supply? buying a compressor, air fed mask etc is very pricey! I am not even spraying cars but games consoles, pads and other small items.

Any advice is very welcome and fingers crossed, I don't need to spend to much!

I wouldn't buy a Chinese copy. I use the sundstrom full face mask but you can get a SR 100 half mask for about £25, then you just need one particle and one organic gas filter which are about £12 for the pair (use a pre-filter also) and a pair of goggles. I lucked out as the company I work for were upgrading to a single combined filter so I got a heap of the filters for free.

Spray in an open area with free flowing ventilation if you haven't got a proper booth, i.e. with at least two open sides so the fumes can vent naturally and quickly. Garages and the like with just the main door open aren't a good place to spray in my opinion. Spray away from yourself and stay upwind and you'll minimise any fumes that are filtered by the mask. Use a small touch up gun for small parts to minimise overspray. This of course is not the best way to do it, an air fed mask is the best and safest way. I also wear paper coveralls from Screwfix.

If one filter fits in one side and the other filter in the other side, what's to stop organic material getting through the particle filter and vice-versa?

I think you should have a look at the design first. Doh...

A link to the model you're talking about would have been helpful.

Most masks I've seen have 2 filters, one each side, and people have actually tried to tell me to fit one of each type of filter in each position

You can also convert the Sundstrom to an air fed mask for about £160 with the SR307 air fed attachment.

Hi there

As you can't smell or taste isocyanates filtering respirators of any sorts are not good. The only recommended type of respirator is an air fed type which creates a zone of positive pressure air within your breathing zone such that any leaks are out wards thus preventing the ingress of any isocyanate laden air.

Do not make the mistake of buying a filtering respirator, I see this mistake far too often.

Jotun sell a non-Iso topcoat called Hardtop CA, might be an option for you? SML sell it and it's £59 for 5 litres. There would also be other options. We use it at the gas terminal as it's non-ISO and is a good paint.

Like Parm says air fed is the only way to go with isocyanate and remember it's not only yourself you should worry about either.

I guess I will need to get an air fed system. Just rather annoying for a hobby, having to fork out huge sums. Safety is still always number one!

Let me see if I understand how air fed systems work:

I will need an air fed mask, specific hose, coalescer filter & another compressor.

Is there is an all in one system available that will not kill the wallet?

airfed mask with a proper prefilter system ... so carbon filter on belt, coalescing filter, water & oil trap.... if you are not going to do it right don't do it at all, after all it is only your long term health you will be affecting, if it does not kill you first

By my calculations, a full air fed system will cost me about £400!

Mask + filters + hose + air compressor


Any one recommend something cheaper?

The airfed mask consumes a lot of air, I have a 3hp clarke industrial which cost £400 on a vat free day and it runs more than 50% of the time to keep my mask running, I only use an sri pro spraygun so it just manages when I am painting! my mask was about £150 and coalescing filter about £70 then approx £40 for the hoses. I already had a 5m filter regulator for pre filtering air before the coalescing filter. I would budget £600-£700 to get one running properly. I did try the mask with a smaller compressor 2hp I think it was but the whistle kept going off due to lack of air. You may manage with another 2.5hp compressor in tandem with yours.

As you are only spraying consoles and nick knacks for hobby use, why not use cellulose colour or basecoat and 1k lacquer? Then you can use a filter mask as they don't contain isocyanates. I don't think for what you are doing you need the extra performance that an iso paint gives.

Great thinking batman, this is in keeping with the requirements of the COSHH Regulations which stipulates substitution of dangerous products for safer ones
