paint over patina

am in the process of working out a design for a weathervane with a customer.

so far the design is an upright log, with an axe planted in the top, and the handle leaning down to the front of the arrow.

anyway, they want the log to look like a log, so I suggested rusting it. they then said they would like the grain on it too, so I was thinking, rust it, then paint the grain on in black, or dark brown and then clear over the top...

anyone see any problems with this?

not sure what paint I will be using yet, but will be fired from an airbrush over a masked off template and then 2k clear over the top, or that's my thoughts so far anyway.

There is a camper van that goes round where I live that has unbelievably realistic looking rust that has been airbrushed. Maybe that is out of your skill area though?

I'd make lines down it with a grinder to give it a grainy sort of look...it should stand out under paint.

I could have my father airbrush it to that standard, but it is a lot more effort than is needed for a weathervane.

well the plan it to rust the metal to colour the log, so might try the grinder on some scrap and see how it comes out. will have something to show them then too

run a few welds down it and it will definately look like bark

Chances are it will be viewed from a distance so I wouldn't be too subtle, I would just streak some shades of brown through with a paintbrush and lacquer.

Lines of weld would look good, and would throw a shadow for a feel of depth.

another good idea. as for the distance, it wont be too far, I think it is going to be mounted in the centre of a small courtyard, where there is currently a naff sun dial. think plans are to rempve the dial and replace with the vane

use as small log and cover it in varnish ? then cut your axe to go on it ?

or strip the bark off in one bit then use that on the sides ??
