Paint Probs

Firstly big hello to everyone and congratz on a Great Forum !!

My names Kev and im a avid Vespa rider ( older ones )

Got a cheap Compressor 1.5hp and 24ltr tank . But its only for scooter Panels so it should be ok,

But I'm having huge probs trying to set the Spray gun Up ??

Can you please help /.?

What pressure should the Compressor Be ? And the flow rate at the
Gun ? Air comes out but no paint

Ps using a 50/50 Thinners and Celluose Mix .

Hey Kev have you had a look in the paint tutorial sections ? but you should have a play with the settings anywhere between 40-45 psi should be ok at the gun. Have you tryed playing the the gun settings opening them up to see if that lets the paint out a light pull of the triger will give air only pull the triger right back and you should get paint & air. I am also just learning to paint. Make sure you have a water trap for the compressor and also a filter in your paint gun. If you can try and get hold of a copy of paintucation its a very detailed dvd regarding painting a car repairs. If you cant find it I could do you a copy its well worth a watch.

Ive added a water filter and a Filter , and to be honest done a fair
bit of research , But i suppose these things sound a lot easier than they
actually are ,
The scooter im doing is all sanded and i managed to prime it with a 1.5mm Gun
, ive now wet sanded the frame with 800, and reading Different Websites decided to get a 1.2mm Gun as my compressor is only 1.5hp /24ltr.

Still when i pull the trigger all the way back i get A nice spread of paint
but only for about 10 sec , it then just sprays air !!

To get 45psi at the gun do i need that to be 65psi at the regulator as im using a 10 mtre hose ?? Must admit when i sprayed the primer i did get a lot of dry paint on the panels ( like dark rough bits )

any ideas ??

what type of gun have you got suction or gravity, check that the vent hole is not blocked.

you could get a regulator that goes onto the gun from mm they are about 8 pound.

Filter your paint through a piece of womans tights ( not while she's wearing em ) it's easy to block up a spray gun .

Assuming a syphon gun (pot below the spray nozzle).

Does sound like a blockage like everyone else has suggested. As eil mentioned I'd look at the breather for the pot (normally a plastic tube sticking out the top). Bit of welding wire down it will unblock it. Otherwise you'll be trying to suck paint from a vaccuum after 10 seconds which sounds like the problem.

Filter is important for other reasons. Lack of filter on the pickup tube will often lead to bits of solid paint from the edge of the tin being sprayed onto the panel leasing to inclusions in the finish. Plastic filters that mount to the end of the pickup tube work well and are available from most friendly spray paint shops. Allow a much greater surface area of filter than tying underwear over the pickup tube.

Not over the pickup tube Malcolm stretch a piece of old ( or new ) tights across the top of your spray gun pot then pour your mixed paint through it . or I use empty Baby milk powder tins ( SMA ) to mix Paint in and stretch a piece of tights across the top to filter the Paint into the spray pot , works a treat. and this will filter out any bits there are floating around your mix.

You can get small gauze filters that slip on the pickup tube. Same as you get ones for the bottom of grav pots. Could be a blockage. Do you strip and clean the gun after use? Just blowing thinners isn't enough. But then it sprays paint but stops so doesn't really sound like it, apart from poss the breather.

What's the specs of the gun - cfm, suggested pressures (or link to it would be best).

Dry/rough bits - too far away, too much pressure, air cap not angled right maybe.

I found that my twenty quid "professional quality" Machine Mart spraygun needed double the suggested air pressure for any reasonable amount of paint to move towards the item I was attempting to spray,have you tried turning up the pressure?

practice painting random things before you jump in and paint your frame/tanks etc..
i used to just spray water on the wall/gate etc to practice how to hold the gun/get the required coverage on stuff
