I have just about finished all the welding on my Rover SD1. It turned out to be much worse than I imagined, both outer sills replaced, repairs to inner sills, N/S front wing and rear wheel arch also required, along with lots of other repairs to floor pan boot floor and inner arches.
Due to the amount of repair work I have done the car will need to be painted down both sides. A decent bodyshop would be looking for about £1k for this which is more than I paid for the car, panels and consumables. I hav'nt counted the hours because it's a labour of love, but there have been lots of them!
I have used a spraygun and compressor before to paint two doors on a ford granada I had, it yielded reasonable results, however because I used cellulose I found it needed lots of polishing as the doors faded quicker than the rest of the car.
Tool station have an offer on at the moment - an SIP 1.5 hp compressor with a 24 litre tank and 7cfm airflow with a couple of tools for £99. I was thinking of taking the plunge and having a go myself - any advice about equipment and techniques would be much appreciated.
